CIO - which feeding - ?s

So.. DD has totally regressed at night, to going every 3 hours. She's always been a sub-par sleeper, but we KNOW she can go longer... she did a week or two (last mt) of just getting up once around 2-3am. And then almost a week of NOT getting up at all. (it was amazing!) I do think she needs to be fed once at night, that is fair for an almost 5 month old..... but not 2 or 3 times. It affects her daytime feeds - she tanks up so much at night, she doesn't eat that well during the day.. and it's just a bad cycle.  :(

My ? is, since I think we need to do some controlled crying (soothing at intervals, not all out crying til she passes out)... would you say to do it at the first feeding or the second/third? My DH thinks we should let her cry for the first, so she'll be that much more hungry when she does get fed (and sleep longer when she gets a more full feeding)...   but I just don't know.

I hate that we will let her cry, but I think she'll benefit (sleep-wise AND eating-wise - getting more food in the daytime) in the long run.

Re: CIO - which feeding - ?s

  • The book that I'm working with just suggests a passage of time - i.e. "My baby will go for six hours before a feed"  Any wakes before then will be treated as such, just a wake. Once you hit the set time, you feed the next time she wakes. I think six hours is fair for a LO of five months.

ETA:  I am curious to see what others say, as I'm contemplating getting rid of our last feed of the night (slowly reducing ounces until we treat it like a wake).

It might also make a difference if your LO is breastfed vs formula fed.  I know exactly how many ounces my LO is getting during the day because we FF.

  • my LO was waking up at 12 or 1, 3 or 4.  I just started by phasing out the first feeding, now she usually sleeps until 5 or 6.  We put her down at 8.

I didn't let her cry through the first feeding though.  The first time she woke up, I held her and rocked her back to sleep.  After two nights of this, she just started sleeping through until 3.

  • What does your pedi say? I would think at almost 5 months she doesn't need either middle of the night feeding. Put to bed at 7 pm and go in at 6 a.m. for a feeding and to  start the day.
