I cheated: Lunch meat

I cheated; I have eaten cold lunch meat. I have had such a craving for a ham sandwich that I gave in. And to make it worse a few weeks ago I had two turkey sandwiches. And every time the meat was cold not heated. Now I feel so bad about it but it was so good. Has anyone else cheated and eaten cold lunch meat?

Re: I cheated: Lunch meat

  • There are ladies who eat lunch meat (at least I remember last time on here ladies did). I never did. I always want a ham and cheese sandwich but I never give in.

I know the day I had her I ordered a sandwich for dinner (I didn't get to eat lunch becuase I just threw up liquids). I was so excited for it, even if it was hospital food.

  • Yes, and also did with my first baby.  He is 100% fine, so don't worry about it.

  • just be aware ladies- the reason for this is to lower your chances of getting listeriosis (nasty food poisoning that's bad for you and worse for baby). i too have cheated, though. mmmm.... salami.
  • Ugh Really, a fvcking lunchmeat post in second tri?  I eat lunch meat nearly every day, and yes I eat it cold. OMG I think my baby may have three heads.

BTW, did you know that you can get lysteriosis from fruit too. . . better stop eating it now.

  • I have eaten plenty of cold lunch meat, hot dogs, feta cheese, and *gasp* even some sushi with my my pregnancies and my son is perfect.  My dr is my age and has 2 young kids too and did the same thing.  She said as long as you are careful in your choices, ie: don't buy sushi from a grocery store where it may have sat out, but go to a reputable place and eat in moderation, it's fine.  I mean honestly, do you think people in Asia give up sushi?  Maybe I just think this way because my husbands family is asian.

Just don't give yourself added stress worrying over a few sandwiches.

You must be having a bad day to write such a grumpy post....Why did you comment, just to make her feel like crap?

  • Maybe as a reminder that lunch meat is not a huge deal and to hopefully keep other people like her from posting ridiculous shiit like this.

I mean at some point it has to irk more than just me.  But I suppose you're right I could have just let this idiotic post go, right.  So it can make other people who eat lunch meat cold feel like shiit when, in actuality, it's not even a big deal.

And what I said about fruit is true. You can get lysteriosis from melon and other ground grown fruit- so we all better stay the heck away from it and then maybe post 4 times in the next hour how we cheated and ate it anyway. *eyeroll*

  • It really is not "cheating". Being pregnant is not a disorder and as with everyday living, everything in moderation. And if it something that you should absolutely not be doing (example: alcohol, smoking, drugs) it would be plastered everywhere! Enjoy your sandwiches ladies!!
  • LOL- I eat lunch meat all the time and my OB said it was fine as long as it's not past it's expiration date. You'll be fine. :-)

  • Well its a lot of post that irk a lot of people but they just move on to the next. I mean we all have our own opinions about everything but if you fell that strongly about it then just dont respond and keep doing what makes you comfortable. Things that dont mean a big deal to you, may be a big deal to others.

Hope you have  a better day Big Smile

Sorry I meant to quote Lillygrrl's comment

  • I'm sorry, but there are only so many things I have room in my brain to worry about and lunch meat isn't one of them.  The risk of listeria is infinitesimally small, and many doctors don't bother mentioning it.  I would be more concerned over the fact that heating up the lunch meat until steaming would make me lose my appetite for lunch.

  • One of my pregnancy cravings is Jimmy Johns. I could eat it ALL the time . . . but I try and hold out for once a month or so.

You'll be fine every once in awhile. I think the big thing to remember during pregnancy is just to watch expiration dates and cookl things thoroughly when cooking. Then all should be good!

  • I hate this deli meat debate. The problem with deli meat is that you could eat the one ham sandwich with listeria in it.  It's not a moderation thing, it's a lottery thing.  You probably will be fine.  However, if you eat the wrong sandwich, you get listeria, it's a bacteria that actually crosses the placenta, and your baby is screwed.

So if you want to take that risk, it's up to you.  But don't tell people it's moderation.  Having a sip of wine here and there is safer than eating that one bad ham sandwich.

  • I just ate a ham sandwich yesterday.  My doctor did ask that if I had to eat a cold cut sandwich that I wait until week 16.  Made it to 18.

  • My MW said this: "If you want it, eat it. If it's supposed to be eaten hot, eat it hot."

I've lived by that for the whole pregnancy. Yep, I eat hot dogs and lunch meat, and I'm OK.

  • My doctor said that if you microwave your lunch meat you shouldn't be eating lunch meat.  Haha, she said as long as the lunch meat is from a trusted source and brand freshly cut you should be fine.  The problem is when the lunch meat gets old and could grow bacteria. Or the pre-packaged stuff that lies round, yikes!  You'll be fine!

  • Yup. Cheater here as well. I have had about 5 turkey sandwiches and probably an equal number of hot dogs.  Just tried to make sure that the cold cuts haven't been sitting out for awhile.  Enjoy your ham sandwich. ;-)

So glad someone posted something intelligent here.  There are lots of things people say to stay away from because we just "don't know" if it's okay or not, and that can get frustrating, but this isn't one of them. This is more like eating raw cookie dough.

I"m agreeing with you. When I'm having my grumpy moments I don't post anything.

  • I avoided it for a while, but ultimately gave in.  However, I buy minimally-processed nitrate-free or organic varieties of lunchmeat anyway so personally didn't feel like it was a health hazard.

I don't think there's anything inherently WRONG with unpasteurized cheeses, rare steaks, lunchmeats, sushi etc -- eating them won't directly harm you or your baby.  It's just that SHOULD you contract a foodborne illness from said foods being improperly prepared, it can wreak a lot more havoc on your body and potentially harm the fetus/cause miscarriage.  Though those situations are rare, no doctor is going to want the liability risk if they say, "Ehhh go ahead; won't kill ya."

I always just made sure the quality of ingredients I put in my body was of high caliber, and I continue to do so now that I'm breastfeeding.  Only the best for me & my baby!
