4 month wake or need to start food?

I go to the doctor in a couple weeks for DD 4 month check up and I'll talk to him before starting food, but wanted to get your opinion.

DD was only getting up once, sometime between2-4a, from about 2.5-3 months.  Shortly after 3 months, we had to drop the swaddle and she got a stuffy nose which messed with her sleep, but she was still only getting up twice a night.  A couple nights ago, DD started getting up every 2 hours or less to eat.  Luckily she eats and goes right back to sleep.

She'll be 4 months Friday and is less than 12 lbs last I checked.  Because she's still small, I don't expect her to be sleeping through the night, but this extreme regression seems off to me.  I'd asked on the FB group about it being the 4 month wake and someone mentioned possibly needing to start solids.  I don't know what to think!

Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Re: 4 month wake or need to start food?

  • I can totally relate, and I know how hard it is to deal with sleep regressions. DD is just a few days past 4 months, and recently has started to wake up 2 or 3 times overnight for weeks now. Prior to that, she was sleeping 8-10 hours straight with no feedings. She is almost 16lbs now, so I'm thinking she has enough weight to go straight through the whole night.

Good luck to you. I'll be curious to read what others have to say.

  • Has she doubled her birth weight? That's one of the readiness signs for solids.  If she hasn't, I'd caution adding solids at barely 4 months, just because she still needs all of her nutrition from bm/formula.  (well, all babies do, but when they haven't doubled birth weight, it's usually not recommended to start solids.)

My first assumption would be that you are dealing with the 4mw, but ask your pedi and see what they say.  Also, it's possible she hit a growth spurt at 4 months. Some babies do!

  • She hasn't doubled, she was 6lb13oz at birth and is maybe 12 lbs now.

She's showing a few of the "ready" signs, like wanting to try my food and reaching for utensils.  However, she still has some of the tongue thrust and can't sit for long periods by herself.  Overall, I don't think she's ready.  (And neither am I, I wasn't planning on solids for another month or two!).

Like I said, I thought it was 4mw (or a growth spurt), but someone else mentioned solids and it got me thinking.  I was planning on talking to the pedi about a food plan since DD will be 6 months right at Thankgiving and her 6 month appt may fall late enough I'd want to start before it.

  • I think 4 months is too early.  At 3 months Georgia's sleeping got worse for a few nights until we did some sleep training.  I think this is just the time when they wake up and notice there's tons of stuff going on around them.  She started wanting to nap less, too.
  • Personally I don't think night waking has to do with needing solids.  At this age, any solids should only be a small supplement to their diet anyway; the majority of calories should be coming from breast milk or formula.  Night waking could be due to the four month wakeful, teething, a growth spurt, poor sleep associations, etc.  And children will naturally have some nights and weeks where they sleep worse than usual too.

    My pediatrician agrees with this.
