4.5 year old drooling

DS1 will be 5 at the end of the year and he is still drooling. It is not something that he does all through out the day. However it happens when he is very excited or nervous. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with this. We had assumed that it was something that he would grow out of by now but the past few days we have had relatives over that he has not seen in a while (so he was very excited) and he was drooling quite a bit. He is in speech therapy for stuttering and articulation but they were unsure as to why he is drooling.

  • I could be wrong as I thought the drooling thing as they got older could be due to low muscle tone in the mouth but I would think the ST would mention that then.

  • My son still drools.  I always think it is an overactive salivary issue, but I have no idea.  It is top of my list for his 3 year well check in Nov.  My dad is a doc and doesn't have any big concerns, but it is just weird to me.  My daughter has never drooled, not even with teething which is also weird.  Oh, and DS also chews all day on stuff.  Toys, his shirt.  It seems to be getting worse.  That is what makes me think it is more than just drooling.  He shouldn't be getting more teeth for years, so it is just interesting.

However, I am an SLP and I know a little about this.  Sometimes drooling is caused by system overload.  Emotionally or cognitively your kiddo's system is getting overloaded by exitement our whatever.  He "forgets" to manage his own secretions.  Weird, I know.  It could be his "executive functioning" is a little on the immature side.  Your SLP should be able to explain this...and if she can't...time for a new SLP!
