Anyone subscribe to the High-Five magazine?

I got a flyer in the mail about subscribing to Highlights or the High-Five magazine. I remember that when I was a kid, I really liked Highlights but I don't remember what was in it. The High-Five version is meant for kids ages 2-6 so I was wondering if this may be something good for DD. If the magazines are good, I may suggest it as a Christmas gift for DD to the grandparents (rather than more toys). Does anyone get the High-Five magazine and if so, do you think it's worth it? The annual subscription is about $25 I think so it's not cheap.

  • We order it for DS and he shows no interest in it what so ever.  It surprises me because he loves books, but for whatever reason he doesn't like this magazine.

  • The in-laws keep renewing DD #1's subscription, which is fine, but I don't know that I'd buy it myself.  She's 4.5 now and I walk her through the magazine when it arrives and she's sort of like "oh, OK" and moves on with her life.  I think the fact that they say its' for ages 2-6 is a real reach.  She didn't pay any attention whatsoever to it until pretty recently and she's a smart/engaged kid who likes books... the puzzles and stuff are way too hard for ages 2/3 IMO.

  • DS likes it.  He loves playing the games in it, particularly the Hidden Pictures and That's silly games.  The stories are really short for him, but he likes the poems b/c he loves to memorize them and recite them back.

  • Maybe for Christmas 2012.  DD has received it for the last two-ish years, and only recently has she been really into it.  She loves getting her own piece of mail and will immediately take it and look through it herself, then ask me to read it.  Like a PP, she loves the Hidden Pictures and That's Silly pages.  I keep old issues in the car, and both she and DS enjoy flipping through them (easier to store and handle than books, and if they get trashed, no big deal).  While I wouldn't pay $25 for it at your DD's age, it could be a decent grandparents' gift next year (my mom pays for our subscription).

  • DS gets it. MIL ordered and keeps up the subscription for it. he loves getting it, mostly because one of his "chores" is to collect the mail and he loves sorting through it and finding something with his name on it. i'd keep getting it just for that fun factor alone!

some of the games are a little advanced (and he is advanced for his age), but the stories are usually interesting enough for me to read and he likes to flip through the pages.

FWIW, DS is almost 5 (eeek!).

  • Thanks ladies for the advice. I think I'll wait until DD is a bit older like you said.

  • DS has been receiving it from my ILs for the last year plus and he barely takes a look at it, if at all.
