Pregnant after IF

Picking your Pediatrician

Hi ladies - So after this weekend's scare and continuing to have contractions, I realized I need to jump everything into high gear just in case the little man decides he wants to make an early appearance.  Plus, no woman in my family has carried past 36 weeks (and that's less than a month away for me), so I need to get everything sorted.

I just moved up all my pediatrician interview appointments and just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.  I pulled a list someone posted when I was in first tri, but wanted to see if there's anything else:

1.  Logistics - hours, weekend/after hour coverage, affiliations, etc

2.  Vaccine philosophy - i.e. have to go on their schedule or can I split things up?

3.  Will they come to the hospital at delivery

4.  Testing procedures and protocols

5.  Screening for developmental delays/disorders

6.  Others?

You would think after 3 different RE consults, I'd be good at talking to doctors by now Big Smile

Re: Picking your Pediatrician

  • If they separate the sick and the well visit.

The pediatrician office that we picked have 3 separate waiting rooms, one for well, one for sick, and one for kids with rashes. They also said that they have 12 exam rooms that each are dedicated for different types of visit. And they try to schedule the sick and well patients at a different time, morning and afternoon.

  • Your list looks good. I also agree with June. That's a good question.

  • I feel a little overwhelmed about it and, of course, as a result, I am procrastinating. I think your list is great! And I liked June's question too. Though I am wondering how many doctors really do that.

Sorry about the scare:(, I am keeping my fingers crossed for prolonged baking time.

  • Great questions!  I'm going to steal them as I have also been procrastinating on the pediatrician search.

    Good luck with the interviews!

  • My kids are older but I can tell you what has been important to me having a ped all these years

    1) there is a dedicated nurses line that you can call with questions

    2) they will see you on the day you call if you have a sick kid

    3) how they handle after hours calls

My ped doesn't make hospital visits - the hospital ped does it and it's just fine, they also don't have a sick/well waiting room but they take you straight into an exam room so you are never sitting in a waiting room.
