i recently found out that my son has an incredibly rare genetic disorder (disorder is typically lethal in male fetuses -- only 60 cases of live males have been reported). i do not know how to handle this. i feel like i am having a breakdown and im sure it doesnt help we found this out when he was only 8 days old so I am dealing with typical newborn stuff & baby blues. I think I need some type of help but don't know how to find it. I know for post partum you typically call your ob/gyn or midwife - but I dont think this is really pp since its mainly because of his diagnosis.are there therapists who specialize in this "?
any help/advice would be appreciated.
Re: how to find help
I had post-partum anxiety, which when combined with my son's specials needs was a nightmare to deal with. I ended up seeing a psychiatrist who deals with post-partum issues -- she prescribed Zoloft which helped a good deal.
It also helped me a great deal to connect with other SN moms -- www.rarechromo.org may be a place to start.
Hugs.
You might contact the genetic counselor and see if they know of anyone other patients' parents have seen. And like the PP said, parent communities can probably give you some suggestions on who to see.
Please do call someone. It can make such a huge difference.
FWIW, I had a hard time and we did not know DS had SN until he was 3 months old. Newborns are emotionally exhausting sometimes. Then throw in the stuff you are dealing with-- a counselor could be huge for you.
Hang in there. Hugs!
