Questions from 9 month appt

So I mentioned to the nurse practitioner during the 9 month appt that DD had trouble with egg yolks. They seemed to make her really fussy. ( My dad has troble eating them too, they make his stomach upset.) She told me that I was supposed to be feeding egg whites anyway. What???? I thought it was only yolks. She made it very clear it was whites. We are just holding off eggs for awhile, but has anyone else heard this? Second, I asked about the transition to whole milk. Just wondering when we were supposed to start: was it at 1 year, right before, right after etc. She told me they are going to to an iron test before we can switch DD. ( She has not problems at all with iron before, never tested etc) was anyone else told this? Some things about this appt just rumbaed me the wrong way. I realize they have a job to do, but I feel like I am being treated like I know nothing.

Re: Questions from 9 month appt

  • That's weird about the eggs thing. I was told at the 6-month appt to give DD yolks only for a while. At the 9-month appt, I was told whites are fine now.

DD was given an anemia test at the 9-month appt (the results were instant), but we weren't given any special permissions after that. Her pedi said no cow's milk (as a drink) until 1 year. He acknowledged that other countries start sooner, but that was just his recommendation.

  • Hmm...weird.  On the sheet my pedi gave me it says egg whites only until 12 months.  I haven't even tried eggs at all yet b/c I've been overly cautious.

  • Ours said yolks for baby, I remember because then he made a comment about making an egg white omelet for me.

he also had the iron check, but it didn't have anything to do w/ milk introduction. Just a standard check.

  • We have our appt on Thursday and I will be discussing the same things.  I'm curious to see what my pedi says.  I haven't given DS any eggs yet.

  • I was told it was egg whites they can't have, however, my dr said that by 9 mos there digestive system is completely formed so technically they can have anything.  Since we have no history of allergies he said we could introduce eggs w/whites, nuts, shellfish, etc.  He said pedi's like you to wait b/c it is easier to treat them the older they are, but allergist want you to introduce earlier.

As for milk, again technically they can have it.  But they don't want you to introduce it before a year b/c the babies still need the nutrients from breastmilk or formula.  He is allowing us to introduce early but said he had to get to 11 1/2 mos before he can be on straight cows milk.  I am pregnant and my milk supply has taken a hit.  So we had an extensive talk about this.  I really don't want to have to ween DS to formula just to ween him to cows milk.

We were told no egg whites until one year, so we're just waiting on eggs altogether until one year to make it easier on us! Our pedi also said we can introduce whole (or 2%) milk after 1 year.

I am curious, did LO get a flu shot? People with egg allergies cannot get the flu shot as the vaccine is grown in eggs (basically). I feel like if LO had any kind of reaction (or even fussiness) after eggs I would want the pedi to sit down and really discuss it with me. Especially considering many LO's are getting flu shots now. Oh, and pedi said nothing about checking W's iron levels before staring cows milk. I have never heard anything about that from our pedi!
she did get a flu shot. The egg thing was not even mentioned even though I had already told her about it. I did not even think of it. It has been like 3 or 4 days now though and she has been ok, but I just feel like she was making a big deal out of things on a 'checklist' and not listening to me.

maybe she meant a standard check, but she directly related to the two for me.

I knew they needed the nutrients until a year, but she made this big deal of the iron check first. I just found it interesting when I had not heard this before and she has had no problems.

  • the only thing pedi said to stay away from was honey (that was at the 6 month appt).

we tried eggs (yolk and white) in pancakes and griff had an allergic reaction (just rashes on the face).  the ER dr said he wasnt concerned and i could try eggs again the next day.  i didnt.  im going to talk to our pedi about it tomorrow at the 9 month appt.

We had a long discussion about it and the Dr never mentioned an iron check before starting.  And they definitely didn't do one at his appt either.  Maybe you can call and double check with the dr about it.
