Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Using "calming" lotions question

So I'm trying to decide if my co-worker is just nuts or if anyone else has heard this.  She said that if you use the lavender lotion for bedtime that it can cause baby girls to develop breasts and underarm & pubic hair...has anyone else heard this or is it BS?

I would ask my pedi, but I don't want her to think I'm nuts....you ladies already know I am lol.

  • if it were true you probably would have heard about it before this random coworker said something... I think if babies started sprouting pubes the lotion would be pulled...

  • What happens to boys that use it...I use it every night on my little guy?!?  But seriously, I haven't heard or seen any bizarre reactions to it and I have been using it for a couple of months along with the wash
  • Your coworker is a moron.

  • I think she is nutz but I can say my pedi said those scented lotions are TERRIBLE for babies -- full of chemicals that usually bother their sensitive skin. He was appalled when I told him I was using it on my newborn -- so I immediately switched to the fragrance free kind.

    Special Precautions & Warnings:

Children: Applying products to the skin that contain lavender oil might not be safe for young boys who have not yet reached puberty. Lavender oil seems to have hormone effects that could disrupt the normal hormones in a boy's body. In some cases, this has resulted in boys developing abnormal breast growth called gynecomastia. The safety of these products when used by young girls is not known.

Yeah I'm totally with everyone thinking she's a moron...I just didn't know if anyone else had heard this too.  She says her daughter (2yo) can't use it because she starts growing underarm hair and developing her breasts.  I think she BSC anyways.  She said she also used it on her son until then (they're twins) and he didn't have any problems with it.

I didn't post this to scare anyone...just looking for information....I use it all the time on Jules and have not seen any changes...and I don't expect to.

  • I had read about the connection to lavender and tea tree oil in regards to boys. I do avoid using it on DS. https://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20070131/lavender-oil-may-spur-breasts-boys

  • I think there is a difference between lavendar oil and the amount of lavendar used to scent the J&J lotion, but maybe thats just me? Huh?

  • I've heard about lavender and boys but not girls. Either way, I wouldn't worry to much about it. I don't know how much faith I would put in this "study". But if it really gets you nervous maybe try a different calming scent, like vanilla.

You're right. Lavender essential oil (which is probably what they're referring to) and something scented with lavender are quite different. The essential oil is a pure concentration, whereas something scented probably has a verrrrry small percentage and a very diluted concentration.

Personally, I've always thought scents were too harsh on a baby's skin anyways so we do not use anything like that on our daughter. I do aromatherapy, and would never suggest someone use lavender on their baby to "calm" them, but I do know some who would. *shrug*

I've heard that OWT, but don't know of many people who would seriously use it in hopes of their daughter growing bigger boobies lol.

  • We stopped using it but for different reasons. We realized that my DD2 slept better over night with less wake ups when using regular lotion versus the night lotion. Coincidence maybe...but no weird hair growth. =)
