Don't forget that the iron in breastmilk or formula counts toward the daily intake, not just the iron in solids. I found it really surprising that most of the fortified iron in cereal isn't absorbable anyway. I plan to wait until around 6 months, and then introduce meats and egg yolk fairly early after that.
Token, what meats will you start with? My MIL keeps talking about chicken liver for babies, but I thought I had read somewhere that too much Vitamin A is toxic for babies, making chicken liver dangerous. (Wish I could remember where I read it....)

I've read not to serve liver more than once a week.
I haven't really decided - probably sort of just whatever I'm cooking for us anyway. Chicken breast, beef steak, venison. And egg yolk, as that seems really easy.
I should show this to the pediatrician who told me to start rice cereal at Gus's 4 month check-up ::eyeroll::
bhilyer:
Can you re-post the link to the current study about starting meats prior to fruits and veggies?
TIA!
I'm looking at the article and I'm not seeing anything about meat prior to fruits and veggies. Just that all 3 can be given as early solids, instead of rice cereal. Am I missing something?

No, you're right iris. Mostly, it says rice cereal is pointless. I'm still going to start with fruits and veggies, I'm just not going to put off protein for months. I'm also not really planning to start until 6 months, so I think that helps baby to have a more matured digestive system.
Our pedi said the same thing - rice cereals have no real value. He said the only reason to do rice cereal is because it is a nice/easy way for our babes to learn to eat from a spoon. He said that as soon as our babe can eat from a spoon, we can/should start intro'ing other foods.
