Scared of the dark?

Not to be a PW or anything, but DH thinks that B is now having such a hard time tonight because it's now too dark in his room (it's usually much lighter when he goes to bed).

While I go google I thought I'd check with you all - anyone hear about being scared of the dark at this age?

My pedi said that babies don't start "fearing" things (like the dark) until around 18 months of age. Before then they just show preferences. So, if that is true, B might not like the dark, but I don't know if there is actual fear involved.

I would say more likely it is just separation anxiety setting in and not wanting to be alone in his room?

I haven't actually done any research on this or anything, so take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know if LO actually fears the dark but I do know that he falls asleep much easier when he has both his nightlight and gloworm.

I'll guess we'll have to see how tomorrow night goes. I hope it's not separation anxiety kicking in. Fingers crossed!

We have 2 nightlights in J's room, and last night when he fell asleep at a friend's house, he woke up and started screaming. When we went in, he was still laying there, half asleep, but it seemed as if he woke up and got scared in a dark room. We turned on a light, rubbed his back, and he immediately went back to sleep. I understand he might be young for being afraid of the dark....but it really seemed like he preferred a room with a light! He takes after his mom...I'm 29 and still have a nightlight myself!

I think they're too young at this age to fear the dark yet... more likely it is separation anxiety. Sad

This. We were up 7 (or maybe 8) times last night as a result. It's horrendous.

We do have an LED nightlight in DS' room. It comes on when it's dark enough and shuts off in the daytime so I don't have to remember to turn it on/off.
