I NEVER had problems finding clothes for my DD and had to put a cap on how much I could spend/buy. Since we found out this LO is a boy I've been looking around in the boy/gender neutral sections and am REALLY disappointed. With the little girl clothes I would see something and have like an immediate connection with something and knew I liked it right away.
With the boy things I haven't found ANYTHING that I've had that same reaction to. I've purchased a few items but nothing excites me and the things I bought I got b/c I could live with them, not b/c I love them.
I'm not a fan of half the animal ones, hate cars, sports, skulls, "tough guy" themes, dogs, polos or most of the striped shirts, etc. That pretty much wipes it out, huh?
I like space, music and dinosaur themed stuff but most of the stuff following those themes I don't think look that cute...I think my poor kid will be naked his whole life! Or at least while I'm responsible for buying his clothes.
Re: underwhelmed with choices for boy clothes...
I am definitely not having this problem! lol
I love animal themed outfits and have even bought a few with cars that were cute. I have found tons of stuff on Gymboree and Janie & Jack's websites that I loved and bought on sale. Got a bunch of cute sleepers and outfits at the Carter's sale and I have tons and tons of little things that I have bought here and there. I am officially banned from shopping until he arrives, other than to fill in any holes and gaps after the shower.
Yeah, I have found a ton of cute boy clothes. I've had to put a cap on spending because I find myself going nuts over the clothes. Then again, I'm not big on pink...

I feel the same way as you in the things I don't like on little boy's clothes, but I've finally found some stores that I really like and actually prefer toddler boy clothes to toddler girl clothes (with the exception of dresses - those are cuter almost all the time. lol).
It does get better as you're dressing a 1+ year old as opposed to an infant. I didn't like that everything was a light blue or light green color and felt that there wasn't really any variety. Check out Pumpkin Patch Kids and Crazy8 if you haven't already. We used to have a Pumpkin Patch here when DS was born, and they had lots of brighter colors (like teal) in the infant sizes so I loved that. I haven't bought much from them online though, but the option is there. Crazy8 is my go-to store, even though we don't have any locally.
I don't do animals/words (like "cute" or "prince")/sports stuff, etc. on clothes, and I think I've found my groove in the boy-world at this point.

As far as baby clothes go...no...I am a bit underwelmed too. I did find a few cute things at K-Mart none the less. You just have to look around. I have found that those first few months that "clothes" are a pain in the butt. All I need are sleep and plays, onsies, and a few cute outfits for church and the like. Outfits are such a pain when changing diapers 12 times a day. I dress them for ease of change not how they "look". Zipper sleepers are far easier than snap sleep and "gowns" are much easier at night.
But it gets better once they get older. 1 year and up I have always liked old navy, gymboree, kohls, marshals, jcpenney. It just takes some looking around to find the cuter stuff. With 2 boys and a third on the way...I am pretty used to it I guess :-)
I loooove my son's clothes. You just have to look in the right places
I did Carters really only for pajamas because I am not into animals or themes. He is dressed exactly the way I would dress myself as an adult, nothing cutesy.
We have a lot from Gap, Old Navy, Target, Gymboree (none of the themey stuff, more pants), Crazy 8. He has lots of collared shirts, which is what my DH wears. Nothing is cuter than a little boy in a collared shirt. You really can find some cute stuff out there, and lots of sales.
Thank you for posting these stores! I've been having the same problem as OP and it's driving me nuts. Now I think I'll have to budget myself. Never thought that would be my problem with boy things!

I am the opposite. I go through stores and find TONS of boy clothes I think are cute and none for girls. Right now all the clothing I've bought is yellow and white because they are the least offensive
I hope that we both find some things we like soon!
ETA: I did find a few cute pieces at Marshalls yesterday. They were Carter's brand for a FRACTION of the price- four onesies for $5, brand new. I highly recommend checking them out.

This, this, this and this. I really hate the hyper-genderization of little boy clothing. Just because he has a penis does not mean that I want to dress him up like a little linebacker or hells angel. And the skull/pirate stuff makes me crazy. Having spent too many months of my life worrying about piracy in the North Indian I find nothing cute about glorifying crime.
I'm exactly the same way with not liking themes or wording on my baby's clothing. It's killing my family (esp mother and MIL) that I'm picky don't want a bunch of the 'traditional' cutesy baby boy clothing.
If you haven't visited TheChildrensPlace.com do it now! They have great sales and clothes that I describe as "little man clothes." They have tons of things that look like something an adult man would wear (which is what I prefer over powder blue onsies with trains or teddy bears on them). Target also has some very cute things.
Yay for little boys!
I hate to tell you sweetie ... but get used to it!
My first was a boy and is now 10 so here's what I've learned:
- there is only ever one rack for boys next to five racks for girls
- boy "themes" are always tough guy - cars, sports, and animals
- boy "themes" get tougher as they get older - skulls, flames, and tools
My advice to you - grab whatever you can that you like / can live with and pair with the plain as much as possible. My guy looks great in blue jeans and plain coloured t-shirts. Thank God he loves it as much as I do.
