Babies: 0 - 3 Months

14 weeks and teething already?

When do babies start to teethe? DS has been drooling a lot lately and has started to suck on his hand/fingers, and just tonight began crying uncontrollably. He's not hungry or dirty and we can't calm him.

Is it teething or something else? He's been such a calm baby up until now.

Re: 14 weeks and teething already?

  • DD1 did this too at about 3 months and I thought teething too.  I also saw/see a lot of women say yup that is teething.  She didn't get her first tooth until 8 months.  Although not impossible, most babies seem to have this stage at about 3 months, and most babies don't get the first tooth until 6 or more.  It isn't uncommon but IDK what causes it.  It likely isn't teething though.  Hope it is a short phase that goes away soon.

  • Teething pain can start at 3 mos even if their teeth don't come in for a couple months after the pain starts.  Babies can also get their first tooth at 3 mos.

ETA: I meant to also say that my son is experiencing teething symptoms now.  I didn't realize that kids teeth this early, but his pedi told me it was time to find some teethers because he recognized the teething symptoms at his 2 mos appt.  He did say it could be a while before he gets any actual teeth.

  • My DD started getting teething symptoms at 7 weeks (drooling a ocean , chewing on everything , crankyness). Now shes 14 weeks and popping her two bottom teeth

It could be teething , visit your dr or dentist and they could tell you more information. for the crankyness try a warm calming bath , cool teething rings , and if he seems to be in a lot of pain Tylenol :)
  • It could be teething. I  asked my pediatrician about this, because LO is also drooling tons. He said drooling is normal sign of teething, but it might take a while, so not to expect the tooth to pop up anytime soon. LO is 10 weeks old though, yours might be closer to it.

  • Thanks, everyone! He calmed down eventually last night and STTN so maybe he was just having a bad evening. I checked around his gums and didn't feel anything yet. But we have teethers in the fridge just in case.
