Baby Names

"Bullying Descriptions" ...useful tool I use with every name.

For the folks who have never use the website "baby names world" through Parent Connect.....

If you click on the name you're looking up, there is a tab called "Considering this name?"  It gives the opportunity with people with that name to explain how that name was used for teasing.  For example most of the "Sylvia's" wrote that people called them "Saliva."  Just thought I would share, because it's helped me decide a definite "NO" to some names.

Now a question.  Would something like that deter you from naming your child a name you love?  I still like "Leah" after knowing teasing descriptions being:

Leah pee-uh

Leah diarrhea

Leah gonorrhea

So sad that such a beautiful name rhymes with so many nasty things.  :(

  • Nope, that wouldn't deter me. Especially not the examples you listed. If kids want to bully, they'll make up something negative for any name. I certainly wouldn't plan my child's name around every conceivable rhyme.

  • Wow Leah Gonorrhea is pretty creative. I never would have thought of that one myself.

Clearly I'm a huge jerk because it also made me laugh.

Honestly...I think regardless of what name you pick, whether you think it's totally safe or not, someone will find a way to make fun of it if they want to.

  • Seriously?  It doesn't matter what you name your child, kid's can and will be able to make fun of it.  Even if you find a name with absolutely no possible way for a bully to twist it into a tease, kid's will find a way to tease your kid for something else.

  • it wouldn't deter me.  kids will find something to pick on no matter what your LO's name is, if you love a name then use it.

  • Whoa, I never would have thought of all those horrible matches for Leah! And I love that name too =( I think those examples would not deter me, but if it was something more obvious, then yes, I'd pick a new name.

  • Yeah, I looked at that. Even for Thomas, an incredibly simple and well-known name, a bunch of people said they had been called "Tom-ASS."

I mean, really, I guess no name is safe.

This. I work in a high school. The creativity of these kids ASTOUNDS me. They will find a way to make fun of anything if they really want to.

this. I was teased mercilessly for Anna. Anna Banana sounded evil in the mouths of the worst bullies and they came up with many more rhymes. I think a kid can do whatever they want with any name.

  • I agree with PPs. I don't think you can escape the possibility of being teased with any name.

  • I think it might be more helpful to look at the chart for "Do you like being named ____ in general?"  Because my name is Juliet, and yes, I got every permutation of the Romeo thing conceivable, but I still really like my name and 79% of Juliets agree.

  • I love the name Leah and would still use it.  I think kids get teased regardless, there's always something people find.
  • Ha! I have used that tool before, it's really neat to hear from people who live with the name. I wonder what all the Naveah's have to say for themselves.

  • Can I just say that our top 3 girl names (should we have another DD someday) are Leah, Sylvia, and Juliet?!? WTF?!? I guess my kids are screwed! FWIW, I have NEVER heard any of the Leah references and I LOVE that name.

Gonnorhea? C'mon... kids don't know what that is.

  • This wouldn't deter me...if kids can't make fun of another kid's name, they'll find something else to make fun of anyway such as weight, hair, clothes, etc.  Kids will be jerks regardless.
  • That is a very neat way to get feedback from people who are actually living with the name you are considering.  Thanks for sharing!
