Stay an extra night? WWYD?

I had CS on Wednesday and feel pretty good. But I'm nervous about going home today. We've had trouble latching and my milk just came in today. DS lost 10% of her birth weight. The doctor said there's no reason I can't go home but I can choose to stay another night. I'm worried that we've only had one successful unsupervised feeding and maybe I should stay another night just to make sure she doesn't keep losing. WWYD or did you do?

  • I only stayed 3 nights after, but I was sooo ready to go home and just get "normal" life started again.  If you have concerns, I'd stay go with the extra night at the hospital.  It can't hurt and could help you feel more confident nursing.

  • Stay.  Since you have concerns you should stay but I'll give you another reason too.  With my 1st c/s I was cleared to go home after 2 days but I could choose to stay another.  Everyone encouraged me to stay, but I wanted to leave.  I was feeling great and I was anxious to get home with my new baby so I left.  I wished I would have stayed.  When you get home, you start worrying about everything that needs to get done around the house and the millions of things you need to do plus you're caring for a newborn.  I was so incredibly exausted those first few weeks I felt like a zombie.  I should have stayed an extra night so that I could have one more day of rest and one more day of not having to worry about anything else but taking care of LO.

  • I only stayed 2 nights. I was so ready to get out of that place! If you feel you need to stay longer though I would.

  • Stay if they will let you.  I was very swollen during my pregnancy so i had to have drains in my incision.  I gave birth on a wednesday and could have left on saturday (so already an extra day) but the dr offered me an extra day and i took it!  Maybe it was because my hospital was awsome, but especially if you are having latching issues.

  • I say stay the extra day.  I spent 5 days in the hospital and it was the only rest I got until my baby started sleeping through the night.  An extra day of nurses there to help you out is always a godsend.

  • I ended up staying an extra night b/c LO also lost more than 10% birthweight and the docs wanted to make sure that once we supplemented and my milk was in that he didn't continue losing.  I wanted to get home as the constant monitoring in the hospital kept me awake more than LO did.  I was glad they kept me though b/c  the next day LO's numbers were going in the right direction(bilirubin levelled off and no weight loss) and it was reassuring.  I would stay the extra night b/c if you're like me, you'll worry when you get home about whether LO is eating/gaining.  GL!

  • If you have concerns, I'd stay. My OB offered to release me or keep me an extra day, and that they would then obviously keep the twins an extra day as well. I chose to stay -- I had some muscle atrophy due to 14 weeks of strict bedrest, and when combining that with c/s pain and two tiny newborns, I figured I'd take the extra day of help!

  • I went home early because I didn't want them to try to force LO to take formula because she lost weight. They were already hinting around it. She had regained her birth weight by day 10.

I also have a super supportive husband who helped out a lot, or rather just did everything for me. I did nothing around the house for two weeks. I don't understand women who feel the need to jump back at it right away. It really just depends on your situation.

  • I only stayed 2 nights the doctor told me the same thing I could go if I wanted or stay 1 more night. The nurses kept waking me up that was why I went home. I wanted to sleep. It's normal for babies to loose some of their birth weight. Your milk came in fast. Mine didn't come in until the 5th day both times. Ask to see a lactation consultant before you leave. If you feel more comfortable staying another night than do so.

  • I went home asap, and wish I would have stayed.  Once home I was responsible for all baby care and all care of myself, which still included pain meds every couple of hours.  It was too much and for any future children I will stay the extra day.
  • I was in for 4 nights and had problem feeding the whole time. I took any appointment I could with a LC and even scheduled an appointment with one a few days after we went home.

  • I would stay. I did. Just because I was nervous about going home alone, DH was back to work that day. Plus I had an awesome experience at the hospital.

  • If you're not losing your mind and beyond ready to get out of there, one night could be very beneficial. Take advantage of a lactation consultant or anyone who could possibly help you with latch issues. It makes a big difference. If you're pretty set on breastfeeding you'll probably be a little less worried once you go home, knowing LO is doing everything properly.
  • I went home a day early but that was so I could have a day of help at home.  Starting the day after that DH was working 13 hour shifts at his new job (ugh, only scheduled for 9- it was a nightmare), my mom worked 8 hours and my only "help" was my younger sister who came by to sort of bring me things for 2 hours.  I wanted to get into the swing of being home before I was just practically abandoned there.

But, if that wasn't the situation and if I had any concerns at all, I would have stayed an extra night.  Well, and if my insurance wasn't a jerk about it (might want to check that out, btw).

  • I stayed.

OB offered to send me home, but insurance covered the extra day.  With a then-2yo at home, I was in no hurry to race home and be in charge of 3 kids.  I wanted all the help I could get in the hospital!

  • STAY! I would have loved to stay an extra week if I could (I was there for monday-friday).

But then, I'm the weird person who actually doesn't mind hospital stays (no cooking/cleaning, someone there to take care of your every need (and after a c section, those extra needs were a lot), a nice food lady comes around and brings you food, etc)

I had a bit of a unique situation since DD was in the nicu. I could go visit her, and then when I got tired, I could walk across the floor to my room and grab a nap. It sucked having to go home, since I would have to drive to visit her.
