What kind of water to mix formula

This may be a dumb question, but what kind of water did you use to mix powdered formula? I've heard everything from tap water to Brita to bottled to sterilized/boiled. It seems like boiling water is overdoing it, I mean there's plenty of non-sterile stuff going in these kids' mouths.

  • We just used tap water.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • we used bottled water at room temp most of the time - we'd buy those huge jugs and fill with those...

but when Grayson started to need warmed bottles b/c of reflux- we mostly used tap water, since it was faster to use hot tap water than having to warm up bottled water :)

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • We have a reverse osmosis system, so we used that.

  • I used tap.  I know that fluoride is in the water (at safe levels), and it contains other minerals in it.  fluoride is good for teeth, so if you do get nursery water make sure it has safe amounts of fluoride (1ppm).  We have really good water here in Oregon, no funny tastes or smells, so I wasn't worried about it.  I think buying nursery water is necessary if you live on well water or if your tap water is questionable.

  • So long as you have city water, tap is perfectly safe. Trust me, there is no industry more regulated than municipal water. The perception that bottled is "cleaner" is nuts.

  • Regular tap water for us.  I sometimes get the side eye from people who buy nursery water.....they are the ones with the unnecessary expense if u ask me!  BTW, I agree with Haven

  • We were water snobs and used distilled water. You can buy jugs of it at the grocery stores.  My dad is a chemist and we were a bit obsessed with what could be in water.
  • We started out using tap water but switched to bottled after there were scares with several water systems in the area being compromised.

  • Like many of the others we just used tap water.  The pedi recommended it as the fluoride in the water is good for them.  Just make sure to use cold or room temp water from the tap, not hot water because chemicals can leach out from the pipes with hotter water.
  • Room temp bottled water! I never warmed bottles either, with twins you need to make your life a little easier! It was easy for night time feedings, just measured out the amount of powder I needed had the bottle of water and bottles right on my dresser! Never had to go to the kitchen! Babies were back in bed after bottle and diaper change!

  • We would have used regular tap water -- it's all I drink. However, our Public Health told us to use bottled for their formula up until a year to avoid fluoridosis. We have higher than normal fluoride levels in our local water.
