Covering car seat in winter

Hi Ladies!

I just hate to bring up the "w" word...but with the weather getting cooler it's on my mind. We usually get 2 feet of snow by Thanksgiving...and it stays pretty much through March, sometimes into April. Fun times.

We also travel a lot during the winter because family is at least 1-2 hours away. Also fun times.

Thinking about LO, I'd like to keep him cozy in his carseat (Graco 35) but not sure if a car seat cover is worth it. I also read that some of the JJ Cole bundle me's will void a car seat warranty if there is an accident etc.

Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!!!

  • I usually bring a blanket out the the car and just put it over him after he's strapped in.  I wouldn't want anything that's strapped in because in addition to worrying about the safety...when we're on a long car trip and the car gets good and warm I like to be without my jacket and I would imagine that he'd be too hot bundled in.

  • That's a good point. I hate wearing my jacket in the car! Hmmm.
  • I had a little bear snowsuit that I would dress her up in if we were just going to daycare or out shopping, because then you are in and out a lot, and could get chilly. But when we were driving Rochester-Buffalo (1 hr +) I would just put her in a warm outfit and tuck in a blanket or two. I like to keep the car warm and I don't usually do the long drive in a coat, so I figured she would be warm enough that way.

  • my friends have the one that just covers the top of the car seat to block the weather elements, not the one that lines the entire seat- plus you can remove it for travel. i would be wary of any thick clothing between the seat and the kid. heat in the car would do the trick.
  • Yup, I just threw a blanket over her in the infant carrier as well.  Your car will heat up, plus I find that they are so snuggled in the car seat they are pretty warm as it is.

Yup, I had this too, which was great for short trips and errands that you are in and out of the car.  It is basically like a shower cap and only goes over the top.  It does not add any padding between the baby and the car seat straps.

  • Awesome. Thanks Ladies!!!
  • I just bundled a blanket around her once she was strapped in.

  • We used a bundleme. I never found it to interfere with the carseat straps.. I don't feel it was unsafe. I had one of the covers that went over just the top of the carseat too, but I didn't think it kept her as warm as the bundle me.
