Upstate NY Babies

How long would you vacation in Europe? (TwoTrue?)

My little brother is leaving soon for his 2 yr tour in Germany. I thought it was only 1 yr, but that was just for Korea.

So, my brain is a spinning with travel thoughts.....maybe, just maybe we can swing a vacation in Germany during his second year! We might be able to stay on base and pay very little per night for accommodations.

I would so love to go, we would bring the kiddo(s) too. How long would you go for to make the cost of flights worth it? Is a week long enough or would you shot for 10-14 days? If we have another baby before then, they would likely be less than 1 yr old. Would that be a crazy trip?

There is so much to think about, but I am starting now because my brother would have to start looking into getting us a place to stay ASAP as they are hard to get.

  • I haven't gone anywhere international since having a kid, but when we went to Jamaica for our hm, we went for 1 week and said after that we wish we went longer.  You are going to lose 2 days just in travel.  And I would think that the travel and packing is the hardest part with kids.  So I would go as long as you are able to with money and work schedules.  How awesome if you are able to do this - visit your bro and do some sight seeing!

  • I've never been international with child but almost every time we go we do 10-14 days. We did 5 days in Paris only because we weren't going anywhere else in France really or any other countries. You lose at least one day of travel each way so even a 10 day is usually only really 8 full days of you in your destination and that's if you only stay in one place.

I would LOVE to go to Germany and I think it would be awesome if you could visit your brother there. He will have so much insight of where to go and where to eat. How fun! I hope it works out!

Took 2 years & 8 months to make our baby! Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • Wow! How exciting and fun to think about! I've not traveled internationally with a child, but imagine pp's are right on in thinking you'll lose some time with travel and then maybe another day after that getting "adjusted", jet lag etc. Not sure though.

Hope it works out for you!

  • I haven't traveled with a LO, but I just wanted to post b/c I'm excited for you. IMO you should plan at least 10 days just to accommodate the travel. I hope this works out for you.

  • i would say a minimum of 10 days.  Our flight time was 6 hours but the whole travel day was 12 hours from  leaving the house to gettting to the resort. Next time we go we are going to try for 10 but it will depend on what i can get off of work.

my girlfriend and her husband are stationed in germany and she is always going go t fun thngs. this weekend she went to a wine festival and drank lots of reisling

  • Germany is fantastic! Did you say he is going to be stationed in Hamburg or am I making that up? Frankfurt?  Anyway, I wouldn't do anything less than 10 days.  I think 12-16 is better.  Like pps said, you lose time with the traveling and settling in.  The nice thing about someplace like Germany is that the Eurorail will make everything very accessible.  You may consider taking a detour to Prague or even just an overnight trip or two to other places in Germany.

Base housing sounds great but if that doesn't work out I would definitely suggest trying to rent a house or apartment.  Having space, kitchen, washing machine, etc is invaluable when traveling with children.

I hope you get to go, I'm jealous just thinking of your plans! :-)

He will be at Ramstein. I would love to travel a bit while there too, and 12-16 days would be do able I think.

We would shoot for spring of 2013 I think....and having is so far away has me believing we can make this happen! I will look into renting a place too, thanks for that tip!

  • Oh how fun! We backpacked through Europe on our HM and of all the countries we visited Germany was definitely one of our faves. Everyone there is SO friendly and the food is so dang good every where you go!!!
I would do a minimum of 2 weeks honestly. Between travel time, kids getting used to time zone changes etc.

The train system in Europe is fantastic and very family friendly so you can get anywhere really fast so seeing more of Germany is definitely an option.

We rented tons of apartments throughout our trip and found places via VRBO or Homeaway.

    GL!
