Purees?

Anyone's LOs NOT eat purees? My kids have been sharing 1 serving of a puree (I make them) for the last 6 weeks or so. B is doing great, he has liked every fruit or veggie we tried and is up to eating 1 serving himself. Natalie is another story. For the last 2 weeks she is constantly "blowing raspberries" and it doesn't stop when she's eating. As soon as food goes in her mouth she raspberries/spits it out. I'd say she actually eats about 10% of what goes in her mouth. I know it's not her tongue reflex- she was ready/eating fine at about 5 months. What do u do in this situation? Start with teeny soft cubes? I gave her a few puffs this morning and she did okay.

Re: Purees?

  • Brianna didn't really eat purees.  Hated them, just no interest.  At about 7months, I just started putting muched food on her plate, or a softer foods she could pick up and kind of mash herself, like a whole banana.  She loved it and did really well.  If you google baby led weaning you can read about it, I think XxKimxX did it with Paul.  Brianna is now my super eater, she loves fruit and veggies.  When I take her McDonalds, she asks for and eats an entire side salad and passes on the nuggets and fries.  So it certainly hasn't had any effect on her eating habits.  On the flip side, Ty loved homemade purees and now only eats about a dozen things as a preschooler.

  • I didn't even start purees until 6 months with dd, so she was a bit older.  But she would eat some purees, but even after 3 times (which is all I would leave it open in the fridge), I would still be tossing half a jar.  I think I gave it 2 months and then we started adding real foods around 8 months.  We found a few flavors of purees she would eat well and then on the other meal I would just do soft foods, like baked beans, cooked soft peas, mashed potatoes, and bananas.  But honestly, at 6 months I don't think they are really getting much nutrition anyway from the purees so I don't think I would worry about it.

Ya, we didn't really do blw since we were also doing purees, but I remember finding some of their websites to get ideas on foods.  I think attachment parenting occasionally had some posts about blw as well.

  • My DD has always been picky, but she wasn't really ready when I tried even at 6-7 months.  You can always look into Baby Led Weaning (BLW).  There are lots of sites out there.
  • So are you thinking she has an interest in solids or prefers that texture? We pretty much did baby led weaning.  DD got very few purees and we never did the rice cereal thing.  We just started with the same food that I eat and she did great.

  • Yup, we did BLW w/ Paul & it was great for him (and he eats like a champ!) I highly recommend looking into it :)

  • DD was just over 6 months when we started them and only did them for a couple weeks before deciding that BLWing made so much more sense to us. We offered what we were eating and she's been a fantastic eater ever since.
