April 2012 Moms

For those that bought a doppler...question?

Just curious why you decided to spend the money and buy one?  Is it really that worth it?  Is it to have the reassurance that your LO's heart is beating every day?  I never bought one with any of my pregnancies, no particular reason why. Just did not spend the money on one.

  • No. They are just something you buy for fun!

  • I bought one b/c it just seems like something fun to do.  I figured I could sell it on e-bay once the LO comes and probably only be out a few bucks.

  • I've spent $50 on a lot stupider things and can hold back on 5 $10 stupid things within the next couple of weeks to make up for it. It's not even reassurance as much as it is amazing to hear. I can let my family hear it, since they won't be coming to any ultrasound. And since I can't feel the baby, it's nice to have some type of connection with him/her.

  • Honestly? I'm not comfortable waiting so long to hear it. I will pretty much be out of my 1st tri before we even hear the heartbeat at the OB. With my daughter I got a total of 3 ultrasounds so I'm used to having that reassurance and I won't have it with this pregnancy due to only getting the one U/S (I know 1 is normal but after having it the other way I guess I was spoiled).

I don't have any losses but it would help ease my nerves to be able to hear it whenever I want.

And on a cutesy note, I got it so my daughter can hear the heartbeat too because she's so excited about becoming a big sister.

  • We bought one when I was pregnant with DS because I was told I had an anterior placenta and I wouldn't feel him for a while (which is true...didn't feel him consistently until about 25 weeks).  I'm an extremely nervous/anxious person when not pregnant, so the $60 was worth the piece of mind for me.

And it's come in handy with this pregnancy already too.  I had to postpone my first appt. by 2 weeks due to a death in the family and we all know how stressful that wait can be.  The day I turned 10 weeks pregnant (a week and a half before my appt), I was able to find Bean's heartbeat.

  • I had a loss in March so I am particularly concerned. We have been able to find the heartbeat consistently and it really helps to ease my mind.

  • I didn't just get one "for fun". I got one because I have been really anxious about having another loss, my fear is pretty extreme which isn't healthy. I love being able to check in on baby before I go to sleep at night. It keeps my mind at ease and my stress level since getting it has decreased exponentially. I will continue to use it until I can feel LO move and have that for reassurance.

  • I bought mine for $50 dollars, and its the best $50 ive ever spent. i had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and everytime i use it i can rest easy that LO is doing fine. I stress less about the baby being okay which is better for the baby. Ive been able to hear the hb since 8 weeks.

  • I got ours with dd, we didn't use it everyday, but it was nice to have and I always love hearing my baby's heartbeat. Also DH likes to be the one to control it & I think its a fun bonding time for dh,baby, & I. Hopefully we'll be able to hear this baby's heartbeat on the doppler soon! I don't think it's the most expensive thing in the world.

  • It is for reassurance.  I don't use it daily, but a couple times a week.  I had a couple losses last year, so I'm a little nervous this time around.  I rented one the first time around when they were really expensive to buy.  Didn't buy one the last time, but did decide it was worth $30 for the peace of mind this time.

  • I bought it for reassurance.  I have heard it a couple times but not everytime.  I am going to dr. every two weeks in 1st trimester for peace of mind (since I had a late    1st tri loss) and once I start going every 4 weeks it will be nice to hear the hb whevever I want.  Worth the $50.

  • For me, DH has not been able to come to appts, and I really wanted him to hear it. It was really fun finding it together. It was a nice bonding moment and I think it made the baby more concrete for him, since he hadn't seen it on the screen. Mine was $50, so if I can resell it for half that I'll feel good about the cost.

  • With DD3 I rented one because DH was deployed at the time and I wanted him to be able to hear the HB so I got it and made recordings for him. I also did 3d/4d u/s's so they could make tapes for me to send to him.

This time I bought one cause it was more cost effective to buy one for 50$ than to rent one for 20$ a month and because I just had my 5th loss in May and I being able to hear the baby's HB whenever I want is rather reassuring and keeps me relaxed.  Plus, again, DH is away so with the home doppler I've been able to make recordings for him.
