1st Trimester

Which due date?

According to this site I am 5 weeks pregnant but I know within a 3 day window when we actually conceived.  When scheduling a doctor's appt do I go by the last time I had my period or when I conceived?

Re: Which due date?

  • First off, congratulations!!!! When scheduling your appointment, go by your last period. That's what your OB will be going by. When you go in for your first u/s they will tweak you due date based on the sizing of your little bean. Good luck!

DS 2/15/08 Bfp #2 9/11/11 EDD 5/20/12 missed m/c confirmed 8w4d, no hb and baby measured 6w5d, natural m/c 10/27/11. I'll always love and miss my little May flower.

  • First I want to say congrats on being pregnant!! I am newly pregnant too! When I look on the websites that help you determine due date, it asked for the last day of you period. Also in my pregnancy book it says to determine your due date you count back three months from your last period and add 7 days! hope this helps!

Congrats! I have been reading a pregnancy book that calculates the EDD the same way also. I think its calculated this way b/c a majority of women don't know the exact date they conceived.

  • They will base your first appointment off of the date of the first day of your last menstrual period. During your first ultrasound they will be able to confirm the EDD which may even fluctuate through your pregnancy.

  • About two weeks before I found out I was pregnant, I had spotting which I thought was my period. I don't know if that counts as my period, or if I should count the period before that. Anyone know?

  • Going off my LMP I am a week further than when I really am. I told my dr when I had a positve OPK and that was spot on to the day of what the baby was measuring.

  • They will ask your LMP when making an appointment, but it wouldn't hurt to tell them you know when you concieved.

I didn't know with DD, so they did an ultrasound and my due date was moved a few days later. Good thing, because I went overdue! If we went by LMP I would have been induced, which I did NOT want. Worth thinking about.

  • Thanks so much for your help!  It's all so new and a lil confusing.  I'll call Monday to schedule my appt.!

  • Going by LMP assumes you ovulated (and conceived) exactly 2 weeks after the start of your last menstrual period. While that is not atypical, most women do not ovulate exactly at that time, and more than half ovulate later.

For example, I was charting so I know that I ovulated on CD 20 (not 14, like the above assumption would say). If my practitioner were to calculate my due date by LMP they would think I was "full term" when I had almost an entire week to go! They would then think I was "overdue" when I was really right at term, and I would be very likely to be induced for being "late" when everything was completely normal. For this reason, I am officially lying about my LMP date to match that of my ovulation, though I will tell my midwives off-the-record if they ask.

The ONLY reason due dates are typically calculated by LMP is because most women don't know when they ovulated/conceived. LMP is easier to track. However, it is not very accurate.

I would say that if you are sure you know when you conceived, go by that. No reason to risk being induced when baby isn't even done cooking, yet!
