I'm only 21 weeks and really wanted to keep as active as I can this pregnancy but I'm so tired and can barely finish a full work out before I get exhausted. Each week I can do less and less and it makes me not even want to got through the effort of getting dressed if I'm not going to get anything out of it.
I can still "run" but I can only do about 1- 1.5 miles at a time, then I stop, stretch, do some arm work, ect, then go another 1-1.5 miles. Max is about 3 miles total. I'm OK with this: it's my hips and my siatica and my belly that are keeping me from doing more. I get that but, the weight training is harder too now.
I do yoga and Barre3 2 times a week, every week and each week it's even harder than the week before. If you continued to weight train or low impact routine, how long did you keep it up and how long till you had to cut back considerably?
Re: When did you give up working out?
Last pregnancy: about 6 months along. I was running 3 miles a day before that, got a cold, and a week or so later when I was over my cold I discovered I just couldn't cut it anymore. Then I realized that "working out" when pregnant really just means staying active. With all you're doing, you're really fine.
This pregnancy: I am not doing any "official" workouts, more just staying active and trying to walk a lot.

When I first got pregnant I took my work outs down from 5 days a week to 4 pretty much right away. I was just too tired.
I stopped running at 20 weeks, I was just too uncomfortable.
Since then, I have been doing 30 minutes of some sort of cardio four days a week. It's lowering in intensidy as the months go along, just due to my lung capacity. I started with stairs and swimming, now it is swimming and the elliptical. Now that I am at 35 weeks I find myself doing more walking and ellipitical. Two to three days a week I do another 30 minutes of weight training. I've been doing this all through out my pregnancy. Except just this last week I decided to drop it. I'm just too limited in what I can do with my belly in the way and I am worried about injury. I'm sure I would be fine, but I think I just want to enjoy this last six weeks. I'll be hungry to get back into shape once this baby arrives.
You can read my blog if you want to read more about my experiences. The girls on H&F are really helpful too and nice. Just listen to your body and you'll be fine

this. i'm making a baby, you want me to workout too?!
i've just been way too exhausted to workout. when i *first* found out, i went to the gym that day and the next (my first time there in probably 2 months). but by the 3rd time, pregnancy fatigue kicked in and i slept for 12+ hours a day. there was no way i'd fit working out into there.
i work in a very large building, so i take one or two 10-20 min walks a day. i count that as my workout.
I've cut back a bit, but still get a few workouts a week in. Though it's 10x harder to get to the gym I feel SOOOOOO good when I'm done and am always happy I went.
Right now I'm looking for a swimsuit so that I can get ready to switch to the pool. I'm also switching from my usual yoga to a pre-natal yoga DVD on netflix. Otherwise I've lightened up on strength training and have kept to my usual cardio workout (though it's lighter and less strenuous these days). All in all I think I w/o four days a week with maybe some leisurely strolls around the area we live tacked on.
Weight training: up to the second tri. My trainer and I agreed at that point that it was not safe to lift the weights I had been lifting. We had already started to do lower weight, higher reps, but honestly about that point it just got to be a waste of my time. I enjoy lifting though, and was used to really challenging myself with heavy weights.
Running was out the window fast, as I have a very high heart rate to start with [90 - 100] and my OB didn't want me going above 150-160. That's a jog for me. [Although, I have told myself that next pregnancy that is BS and I'm not giving up running as long as I watch other cues and make sure I am breathing fine].
I walked and did yoga the entire pregnancy, and the stationary recumbent bike was my friend when I was just exhausted. ETA: oh, and swim aerobics. I loved it - I got to hang with the old people who were awesome
With each pregnancy it gets harder on the body. Last time I couldn't even stand for more than 2 minutes without seriously hurting by the 3rd trimester (and my workouts were mowing the lawn with a push mower for an hour a week not running or anything challenging.) Just listen to your body and back off as much as you need to, since a healthy baby is more important than having your body bounce back in 3 months.
I felt like things definitely got harder, and switching to lower weights / higher reps helped. My trainer was experienced in working with pregnant clients, and that was her recommendation. The injury potential increases with the more relaxin in your body, and you are sharing a lot of your "energy" [blood, oxygen, nutrition] with the baby. It sounds like you are still doing great - just keep listening to your body. If things feel harder, maybe it's time to cut the weights just a bit.
