BF'ing, but bottle question

How many bottles would be reasonable if I am BF'ing? What type do you recommend?

I was thinking of going with the Playtex Drop-Ins, and maybe 6 bottles?

Re: BF'ing, but bottle question

  • I'm in the same boat. I've asked this question here and the best advice I got was to get a few different kinds. I'm also going with 6 to start out but getting 2-3 different brands. Apparently babies are really picky. ;)

  • I'm also in the same boat.  From those that I've talked to (friends and family) 6 bottles is about the right number and try several different types because the nipples will be different and baby might prefer one over another.  The trick is introducing the bottle at the "right" time.  I have heard that if you wait too long to introduce the bottle, the baby may not want to take it.  On the other hand though, if you introduce it too early the baby may not want to take the breast.  My SIL said that if you introduce the bottle after the first 3 weeks and before the first 6 weeks is up, once or twice a day, you should be just fine.  I hope that helps and that I'm giving good reliable information!  Good luck!
  • I Bf'd my son for 5 months.  Went back to work at 12 weeks (part-time).  Tried to introduce the bottle at around 6 weeks or so.  It was not an easy process.  There were times when I was at work and he refused to eat. I had to leave early...  Anyway as far as the bottles go.  I would only buy one of a few types of bottles at first. All babies are different.  Mine would not take the born free ones in the beginning at all.  He finally took the Medela ones. You just have to experiment with them and see what is going to work for them.
  • Are you going to SAH and BF, or put LO in day care with pumped BM?

  • My DH and I attended a breastfeeding class/seminar on Thursday. The presenters were the local hospital's lactation consultants. They advised exclusive breastfeeding mother's to not introduce a bottle until 4-6 weeks and to use a slow release nipple. For what it's worth, they recommended Tommy Tippee with a slow release nipple, The First Years Breastflow Bottles, and Dr. Brown with a level one nipple.

They didn't give any advise about how many, but I'm not going to go bottle crazy. I know they'll be washed right after they're used so 6-8 bottles should be plenty.

In the beginning, I'll be at home and BF. I would like DH to be part of the feeding process after a while, so maybe pump a little as well.

I'm going to put LO in daycare and pump in the beginning of Jan (BF in the evenings). LO would be about 10wks. I'm hoping to introduce the bottle a little earlier just so she is used to it.

In that case, six bottles should be plenty. I wouldn't go too crazy because you never know what kind baby will take to. We tried 4 different brands before settling on Tommee Tippee. With introduced the bottle at 4 weeks and DD had no problem going between bottle and breast.

  • We bought The First Years BreastFlow Set, we only used it a few times (we breastfed for 14 months) but we never had any problems with them and DD did fine with them.  IT was nice because it came in a set.  I would recommend them even though we didn't use them that often because they are supposed to imitate a breast and the flow of a breast very nicely.

  • We had 6. I would take 3 to daycare, and then pump into the remaining 3 at work.
  • FWIW...I started with fancy bottles but switched to platex dropins because DS took them much better and the bag collapses the way a breast does. I have found MANY BFing moms who recommmend the playtex. If you do decide to use playtex, ask your DC provider if you need to bring in lots of bottles or if you can just bring 2 bottles and then bring extra nipples. Since the milk is in the drop in really it is only the nipple that gets dirty and needs to be exchanged. This could save you some valuable cabinet space. If you can bring lots of nipples then I would recommend getting about 4 of the smaller bottles then as your LO gets older and takes more milk in a feeding (mine never took more than 4oz) you can get bigger bottles if needed.

That is a great idea. I think I'll get more nipples than bottles.
