Can I eat steak?

I was told by my RE that I can't eat raw food, which is completely understandable.  Once in awhile I enjoy a good steak but I like my steak a little bloody.  Would you consider that raw?  Should I only cook red meet well?  I don't think I will eat it at all if I need to cook it well but I thought I'd ask.

Re: Can I eat steak?

  • You should only eat meat that is well cooked, including steak.

  • I haven't asked this question, but I'm betting that the answer is going to be well.  I eat mine medium usually, but I'm thinking medium well would be okay?  I can't stand the thought of it being cooked to the point of being black and chewy.

  • I personally always went with medium. I wouldn't go bloody.

  • Go medium or medium well and you will be fine

  • Thanks ladies!  I would rather not eat steak then have it cooked to a crisp.  I will definitely ask my RE on Friday at my next u/s but I wanted to get your opinion as well.  Hopefully I can just have it medium or medium well like you said.

  • It's ok but I would go at least medium or medium-well.

  • If you are really worried about it, get a meat thermometer. Just because it is pink doesn't mean it has not reached a temp high enough to kill the bacteria.
  • wouldn't that be kind of awkward to bring a meat thermometer to a restaurant?

    I'd go for medium well.

  • At least medium.  There's probably a certain temp it should be cooked to which would be super easy to check in a few seconds with a food thermometer.  A quick call to your OB should give you an easy answer. One of the nurses could probably answer it for you.

  • While eating an under cooked steak will not be recommended/considered completely safe, its much safer than eating under cooked ground meat.  Most of the harmful bacteria are on the outside of meat and will be cooked on a whole piece, but when ground it gets all mushed up together.  Eating a medium steak isn't risk free but I personally feel comfortable doing it but I definitely wouldn't eat a medium hamburger.

  • I didn't even think about this. I just had a medium rare steak last Sunday. Oops.

  • My doc said medium-rare was fine, which is the way I prefer it. Most stuff I read says internal temp of 145*, but my meat thermometer sucks, so I don't use it. I'm like you - I'd rather not eat it at all if I have to eat it gray and lifeless.
