Has anyone used ThredUp.com?

My sister just told me about threadup.com. We have tons and tons of too small clothes and I don't want to save them all. I sorted everything and have two large boxes that I was going to sell on Ebay and now I am wondering if I should use thredup. Just looking for experiences!

ETA: I am still figuring out how this works but if you sign up through my referral link you get $5 which is what it costs to get a box of clothes/toys/boxes. I am not posting that for myself since I only get $5 if you mail out a box. You still have to pay shipping which I think is $10.95.  You can choose the box you want and there is a description of the items and you can search by brand name etc.

Re: Has anyone used ThredUp.com?

  • Yes. I did back when some daily site gave me credit that I used towards the boxes of clothes. Seems like I got 2 boxes for less than $6? One box had Jack&Janie, Gymboree, really cute stuff. The other box was crap.

What kept me from using thredup is that I have to post a box to receive a box AND pay money. If it was free across the board (or alot cheaper) then I'd be all over it.

I just take outgrown clothes to the consignment stores (usually the yr after, pre-season that the clothes are) get store credit and buy more clothes.

Ok I was wondering how that worked. So you can't buy a box unless you post a box. I am assuming the $5 is for the company? The shipping should be a lot cheaper IMO. Flat Rate boxes are probably more expensive although probably a lot easier. Also is there a guaranteed number of items that will be in the box? At least the swappers have a rating so you can try to avoid getting crap. I think I want to try it once just to see.

  • Also, I think a photo should be posted of all the items. It isn't that hard to do with cell phones.

  • I've used it. You can buy a box without posting one. They'll tell you that you "owe" a  box after you've made your purchase. It's usually $5 for the box and $10.95 for Priority flat rate shipping. When you post your box, they send you priority boxes so that if someone orders your box, you just print the shipping label (paid by the buyer) and have the USPS pick it up or drop it at the post office. You only ever pay shipping when you buy a box...when someone buys from you, they pay for the shipping. You just are responsible for printing the label and getting it out to them.

The box I got was mostly Carter's one pieces and long-sleeve stuff for fall. I think there was like 17 items? So it was essentially a little less than $1 for every piece. It is a gamble of whether you'll get truly awesome items or some less-than-stellar, but if it works out, it's a good deal!

  • I was going to use it, but the cost of shipping, and no photos threw me off. I can sell my clothes to the consignment store or on craigslist, or even to a friend of mine and then go and see clothes at a consignment sale, for just about the same price.

  • i have an account. i tried to post a box in may to donate to victims of the minnesota tornado, but i got a message just a couple weeks ago that my box wasn't picked? wtf, i thought i was donating it? so, i'm a little leery of any place that would solicit donations for victims of a disaster, yet not give the stuff away?

I'm surprised they don't have it set up to include photos. I saw one person give a link to photobucket photos though.
