1st Trimester

migraines?

any other migraine sufferers in the 1st trimester? I'm 4 weeks and have a bad one right now, but my nurse practitioner said not to take Excedrin Migraine.  She recommended I take Tylenol and drink some caffeine instead, but it's not helping.  I have my first appt in two weeks so I'll ask about it then, but can anyone recommend anything or have any tips they can share for dealing (especially at work!)

Re: migraines?

  • My experience was my prenatals were causing my migraines. I had to switch because the store quit carrying what I took before. I am currently just taking Flinstones until I can go out of town this weekend to see if I can find what I took before somewhere else.

Maybe that could be the cause? Only way to know is to stop taking what you are taking and see how you feel.

  • I'm also a migraine sufferer and have been in your shoes.  You should not take Excedrin Migraine, I ended up suffering through with Extra strength Tylenol.  Not sure if you've ever tried it but I also tried using "Head On" topical pain reliever when I just couldn't handle it anymore.  If it helps, when I was pregnant with my DS last year, my migraines disappeared after my first trimester and didn't return until I finished breastfeeding.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that your migraine ends soon and that you have the luck I had with the rest of your pregnancy!

  • I am in your shoes as well. I took tylenol and put a heating pad on my neck and shoulders last night and it helped a lot. I suffered from them before I was pregnant and started to see a chiropractor. I have gone weeks without them but lately they are back.

  • I'm in the same boat! I had one just 2 weeks ago, and was so disappointed, because I had really been hoping I would turn out to be in that miracle group of sufferers where they just "disappear" during pregnancy! Stick out tongue

Anyway, I wound up suffering through without anything, because I was terrified about taking anything. My doctor since has told me not to be an idiot, and to try some extra strength tylenol with a can of Coke (for caffeine). I doubt it will work, since Excedrin seems to be the only combo of ingredients that ever works for me (and we cant take that last ingredient in it- the aspirin), but we'll see!

My only tip for you is laying down in a cool dark room with a wet washcloth on your head. (Which isn't helpful at work, I know- sorry.) I can't make it through migraines at work though; I've actually had to get rides home before if I can't catch the migraine in time; I wind up throwing up, get dizzy/vision blurs, one side of my face gets puffy, one eye tears up constantly, etc.

Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it goes away soon!

  • I get them here and there too.  I'd try increasing your water intake, because that has helped me pregnant or not, and also getting some sleep/rest.  That's always been helpful for me.  Breathing fresh cool air while taking a quiet stroll is also another thing I love to do when I don't feel well.  Hope this helps!
  • I'm still in school so I kinda have to tough it out, but when I'm at home and get one I just get all of my fluffy pillows and snuggle them around my head and try to relax :) Eventually i fall asleep and wake up with out a migrane :)
  • I posted a similar question yesterday.  I've suffered from chronic migraines since I was a kid.  They got much more severe when I hit puberty and seem to hit with fluctuations in hormones each month.  I'm about 8.5 weeks and I just had my first migraine while pg the other day.  It was so much worse than usual.

The short story is that I slept (3:30PM-6AM) with an ice pack on my head.  I don't do meds in general, but especially since being pg.  Someone recommended peppermint oil on my temples.  I did try that years ago and will prob start that again the next time a migraine hits.

I'm so sorry you're are dealing with this.  I don't think most people realize how debilitating migraines are and how different they are from a "regular" headache.  I can totally empathize and hope that your migraines are few and far between for the next 9 months!

  • Sorry- its a little long winded!

In the past 2 weeks, I began having migraines. I used to have my TMJ under control with ibuprofen products, it never became an issue. Oh, I have braces also. I was going back and forth with my orthodontics and dentist office trying to get some sort of relief, for 3days. Because I'm prego, no one had any answers except what I was already doing. Previously, OB sent a Rx for Tylenol with hydrocodone which was not touching the pain, nor was extra strength Tylenol, Vick's which is good for muscle aches not just chest congestion, cold and moist heat, soft diet, nothing was working. I ended up in the ER with the worst migraine, blurry vision, light sensitivity, nausea and vomiting (which have been gone since 9wks). Heard all kinds of things about what I can and can't take and do, I need to get the braces removed, blahblahblah. Luckily my OB is amazing and squeezed me in the schedule yesterday after being in tears and in pain because no one had any help to offer and DH felt helpless to make it better. She prescribed me Flexeril, which is a class B muscle relaxant, the same as Zofran for nausea. and a steroid pack for the inflammation in my jaw joint with a referral for acupuncture and massage therapy to my face. I'm a surgery nurse now but worked in high risk OB for almost a year. I would never do anything to put my baby in harms way (my husband and I went through a lot of worrying to get to this point b/c I was diagnosed with non-HPV related cervical cancer when I was 19 and had it reoccur last year, being told I may not be able to get pregnant) But theres no way I could physically make it through this pregnancy without some sort of help. Just remember, that when your in pain, generally it causes your blood pressure to go up, just like stress does, which translate into a stressful environment for your baby, which can be just as harmful. If you call your OB and they say theres something you can take or do to help, you should do it. The OB is on your side and they wouldn't do anything to put you or your baby in harms way any more than you would.
