Wheat intolerance and introducing solids

Anyone have any experience with this? Ds is 5.5 months and has a wheat intolerance. (Its much better than it was. I am BF and can at least eat a little bread now but nothing fried or no plates of pasta.)  We are going to introduce solids at 6 months and I am wondering about baby food. I am thinking about store bought food using wheat as a thickener, etc. If wheat is not listed in the ingredients, have you found it to be OK? I am scared it wont be listed and I will feed it to him. What about Rice cereal? I googled and mostly got articles about making your own baby food, which I really just don't have time to do.  Any advice or experiences would be great. TIA

  • We used Earthsbest rice cereal without an issue but the kids never liked it.  :)

But for the rest of the babyfood, I did make my own. It truly very little time at all.  If you want to give the kid banana, you peal it and mash it, that's all.  For most of the fruits and veggies I just steamed them and mashed or cubed them.  After a little while the kids were just eating what we were eating.

  • wheat is listed as one of the top 8 allergens, so it should be listed (should..).

Also, i would just check out the gluten free isle in your nearest health food shop.. they probably have plenty.

  • We had a lot of issues with cross contamination with wheat and baby cereal- even with the EB which is supposed to be wheat free.  ALl of those cereals are made in the same factory and since everything is ground up so fine- it's easy for cc to occur.  Making your own cereal is actually really easy and takes just a few minutes to make a giant batch.  I bought safe oats and just ran them through my food processor for a few minutes and then you have a big container of baby oatmeal with very little effort.

Making baby food is pretty easy- you can do really big batches and freeze it to cut down on the daily effort.  If you do buy it pre-made- we had issues with gerber foods several times (lots of cc problems) and I'm not sure that I'd trust them.  The organic brands tend to be more careful with labeling and were much more willing to talk to me when I called to inquire about their manufacturing practices.
