Crib & Changer Combos - Yay or nay?

Baby Bargains is very against crib & changer combos but as I look at them, they look so handy, I'm tempted to get one. Do any of you have one? Do you love/hate it? Either way, what brand did you get & what would you say are the pros & cons?

I personally don't like the attached part. I think Baby Bargains is the book that says it just gives baby another surface to get onto once he is more mobile, and is therefore risky. I for one wish we skipped the changer and went with a longer dresser and the pad on top. So much more functional!

Don't buy into it.

It always seems like a fantastic space-saving idea until your 1 year old is using the changing table to climb out of the crib.

I'd even go so far as to say to not even buy a dedicated changing table. Save yourself the hassle and just put a changing pad on a low dresser.

DS is off the charts for length (29.5 inches at 6 months) and is already 2 inches short of a standard changing pad. By Christmas, he'll be getting changed on the floor or our bed because he'll be too long. I'm glad that I can just take the pad off the dresser and not have a wasted piece of furniture.

I don't like them either.

I know LO isn't going to probably care but I wouldn't want to sleep so close to where my poopy diapers got changed. Beyond that I would think LO would outgrow the changing table part quickly then it would just be taking up space.

If you have the room I'd get just the crib then look at used dressers (antique stores, craigslist, garage sales) that you could put a changing pad on. That way the piece will be more functional later on.

I think they're a waste. We got a dresser from CL and I refinished it. Tons of storage space and it's actually functional. Once it's not needed as a changing table it will still be useful.

I opted for the dresser/changing table instead. I have heard that one big reason people aren't a fan is bc once LO can stand or reach the table, anything on it could be a danger and it can also help LO climb out of the crib. I have it set up so LOs head and arms are away from any diaper change supplies, they are all at LOs feet on the table.

The changing pad size is not the standard size either. It's much smaller!

Not unless you are looking to shorten your crib time! Cole would have been able to get out at 11 months old - he's always been a climber.

With DD since space was limited in my room I got a Simplicity Crib/Changer combo. If my room had been slightly bigger it would have been a bit more useful than it was to me, however, it did serve it's purpose. I never had any issues with my daughter climbing out. I think it's a personal choice for each individual, but if you have the space why not go ahead and get a changer, even if it's not an expensive one or huge one? Walmart has the same ones that Target and BRU but for better pricing. For the first three months DS will be in our room, and then move to DD room after she's adjusted to the idea of having a baby around. I chose this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Badger-Basket-Changing-Table-with-Hamper-and-Baskets-Espresso/14170485 because I felt that it served it's purpose as a changer and also for the fact that it was greatly priced and you don't have to worry about flimsy drawers from some of the dressers, and the ability to store things like diapers and whatnot. Eventually we will get a fairly large dresser or regular one to put into their room once he's probably about a year old at least. Right now they have those hard plastic storage dresser type things since their things are so little, and they fit neatly in my daughter's closet. Hope some of this helps.
