Babies: 0 - 3 Months

best toys/books for baby

I'm trying to keep my 6 week old baby up more during the day.  Pedi has told me that she should sleep no more than 3 hours during the day.  I'm working on it, but baby likes to sleep.  We have a playmat/gym, but I would love to know what else I can entertain her with.

Thanks!

Re: best toys/books for baby

  • Are you sure the pedi didn't mean "no more than 3 hours at a time" vs. "no more than 3 hours total" during the day?  Because my 11 week old baby sleeps 9 hours at night and probably another 5 during the day (with 2-3 of those 5 hours being one long stretch in the afternoon).

Anyway, my LO had little interest in toys at 6 weeks.  In the past couple weeks, she's started to enjoy her mobile, her FP kick piano, and she'll stare at the toys hanging from her activity mat or stare at the ceiling fan and babble.

Thanks for your reply.  Pedi said 3 hours should be the most baby sleeps during the day because otherwise it is throwing off her night time sleep which seems to be true.  However, I know a lot of babies sleep more than 3 hours during the day and 3 hours is a tough limit, but I'm aiming at least to get close to that.

Wow, that's crazy. My DD takes a 2-3 hour am nap and usually a 1-2 hour afternoon nap (plus little cat naps throughout the day) AND she sleeps great at night. I don't think it's healthy to limit her sleep.

I have actually read several times that the more they sleep during the day, the better they sleep at night. My LO is not a napper, but he still sometimes exceeds that 3 hour limit. He usually takes one 2-3 hour afternoon nap and maybe a few 10 minutes naps throughout the day. From what i have seen on the bump, most infants sleep a lot more than that.
  • you could try the Hand Puppet books- Twinkle twinkle Panda Bear, Hey Diddle Diddle. Touch and Feel books.

  • my LO sleeps on average a total of 2.5 hours durring th day,if i'm lucky. hes done this since he was about 5 weeks. he sleeps about 11 hours at night, which is fine with me. he love books, especially books with movement. the head and the tails books by van fleet are his favs. he likes his colourful toys the best and if they make sound or have lights thats a plus!
  • My DD loves (and i mean LOVES) her Hello, Bugs! book. If she is fussing all I have to do is open a page and hold it in front of her. It mesmerizes her.  She has been enjoying it since she was about 4 weeks.

  • If you sign up at www.productiveparenting.com, they will email you daily activities to do with your child based on their age. At this age, the activities are simple but I like having different things to do with DS everyday.
