Flu shots

DH got his dates that his employer will be providing flu shots and that got me to thinking about if the dr.s would reccommend LO getting one. I did some research and found out it isn't reccommended that a child under 6 months get the shot, but if the mother receieved the shot while pregnant, the baby would receive the benefits. I usually do not get the flu shot because it always makes me sick, but will toughen it out if it means LO will be protected. I plan on talking with my OB about this at my next appointment, but wanted your thoughts and opinions! How are you planning on protecting LO for the upcoming flu season? Sorry for the no paragraphs, I'm posting from my phone!

  • They gave it to me at my last appointment. Usually I would decline, but for the baby it seemed like the better choice this year.

  • I know from prior baby and Im a nurse that when you are in the hospital they will also give it to the mom. The baby doesnt get it until 6 months old..so its really important that the mother and father both get the flu shot and visitors who come by are not sick and have had the shot as well. Anything you get while the baby is inside you will transfer over to him/her for the first few months. Also if you breast feed they get the moms antibodies too. (for instance chicken pox..if the mom had her vaccines and then breast feeds the baby too will have those antibodies for the first i believe 5-6 months) hope that helps:))

  • Also posting from my phone so forgive the lack of punctuation. this is a sort of controversial subkect around the medical community. a good friend of ours who is a pediatrician recommended i get the shot when i was pregnant or the mist after i gave birth. i ended up with an emergency induction so i got the mist since there wasnt time for the shot while i was pregnant. i guess the mist is more likely to pass through breastmilk if youre bfing and the shot is more likely to pass through the placenta if youre still pregnant.

  • I got the flu shot in late August. I read that it can take up to 2 weeks for all of its effects to pass through the placenta to the baby.

DD was born in September and couldn't get a flu shot until March. She got the flu at 5.5 months and had to go to the hospital, got bronchiolitis and had to be given breathing treatments 4x/day for 2 months afterwards. It was not fun at all.

  • I asked my doc about this a couple weeks ago, because I know that when mom gets it while pregnant, baby is protected too.  Sadly, my hospital doesn't start offering the shot until November, so I am thinking I am gonna look into getting it at a flu-shot clinic or something if possible.

  • I got mine today.  I had to convince my primary care office to schedule me a nurse visit since the next clinic isn't until after my due date.  My OB's office didn't have their supply in yet, but a lot of pharmacies near me have them available as well.  Unfortunately my insurance wouldn't cover the shot unless it was administered by a nurse (not a immunizing pharmacist).  DH and DS will be getting theirs next week so we'll hopefully have a bubble of protection around baby girl for the people she's around daily.
