Conflicting info flying around... should a newborn go in a crib with or without a bumper? And how about all the crib bedding sets that people register for? Is there a need for a quilt/bumper/blanket that usually comes in a set if a newborn should only be placed on a mattress with a sheet and nothing more?? When does the quilt and bumper come in?
Re: Bumper or no bumper?
We currently have nothing but a sheet in DD's crib, but we bought the whole set. I use the quilt as decoration and as something to place on the floor when she's playing. I have not used the bumpers yet, but I might later when she gets older or I might not. I think they're super duper cute though. I know plenty of people who have used them since birth but I think the general recommendation is that they shouldn't be used at all or at least until they're relatively mobile, maybe after 9 months-1 year? I'm not sure. I haven't looked up the research on that yet.
Aside from safety concerns, we never used a bumper. DD never seemed to hurt herself when she rolled into the edge of the crib, so we never added one once she was old enough. Now that DD is almost 2, I am just thinking about giving her a larger blanket or quilt because she has grown enough that her baby blanket (knit by family) isn't long enough to cover her well. I don't think I would use one of the cute but chunky quilts that come in sets anyway- I want something softer for her that's more cozy to sleep under.
We only have crib sheets and miracle sheets (or whatever they're called that snap over the sheet) for DD's crib, aside from the pillow, blanket and stuffed animals that have accumulated over time. The sets have way too much that we never would have used.
We used the breathable bumper from the time DD went into the crib until about 2 weeks ago. Without it she was bumping her head and sticking legs/arms through the slats.
Like most others, we didn't use the cute ones that came with the bedding set, and didnt' use any at all for DD#1, then for DD#2, we got breathable since she moved around a lot more than DD#1. That being said, we took them out when she got to the point where she was pulling to a stand (8 or 9 months) since I heard they can use them to stand on and get out of their cribs and fall. So it seems like a short window if use, although others seem to have used them for longer than we did.
This. I saw no need for extraneous pieces (like wall hangings, a tiny pillow, valences) that served no purpose and were usually too cutesy for my taste anyway. I picked a color scheme for the room, bought sheets and changing pad covers that matched it, got white curtains and a white crib skirt, and my mom made each kid a quilt when they got a bit older. We did use a white breathable bumper with both kids since they've been movers and shakers since day one. Since I liked a neutral (bordering on boyish, perhaps) color combination, everything we got for DD was recycled for DS and will be used for #3. Cheap and easy.
Ditto to all of this. In our house the bumper came into play when baby started rolling around and hitting their head on the side of the crib, thus waking them up, thus making them cry, thus waking us up... you get the picture. Our quilt is hanging on the wall above the crib as a decoration.
