Hi Ladies!
I'm newly pregnant (7weeks & 4 days) and new to the bump.
Just wondering for the Buffalo/Amherst girls which hospital did you deliver at?
Did you like it? Why or why not?
I'm leaning towards WCHOB or Millard Fillmore Suburban but have heard good things about Sisters as well.
Thanks!
Re: Hospitals in Buffalo/Amherst Area?
I delivered at Sisters both times. My OB does do deliveries at suburban too, but I think they do most at sisters. I didn't have a choice because i was a high risk pg, so they wanted me to be at sisters because they have a much better NICU. (not sure if suburban has one at all?). I honestly have NO complaints at all.

Natalie Ruth - Born 6/13/11 7lb 6.6oz
I delivered at Suburban. I loved that there is tons of free parking. (Hate parking at Children's.) I had a C-section, but visited L&D several times for pre-term labor and everyone was really nice. I have zero complaints about Suburban.
I have been to the ER at Children's a few times with the boys. Alex also had his tubes put in there. We were treated very nice while we were there...but have I mentioned that I hate the parking?
With my OB, my only other option was Sisters, but I don't know anything about Sistes. (We've been in Buffalo almost 5 years. In that time we've only been to Children's and Suburban.)
I do have a OB and she's def affiliated with WCHOB and Millard Fillmore Suburban, not 100% positive about Sister's but I think she is.
I've heard good and bad things about all 3. I lean towards Millard bc it'll be closer to home and I know they have a much newer facility, private rooms and I *think* the baby stays in the room with you right? And I read a recent article that said they are very pro breastfeeding and have lots of support for latching, etc after delivery. But I worry about unknowns during delivery and like the comfort of knowing WCHOB has a NICU right there.
I delivered at Suburban and the baby does not stay in the room with you. You have to take the baby to the nursery at night. I had a great expieience with L&D. The nurses there are great. The one we had before I actually delivered came over to mother baby to meet Belle. She was going to request us that night also if we hadn't had Belle by then.
The nurses on Mother Baby are a different story. They were very unattentive and DH got into a fight with one when they yelled at us for still having Belle in the room with us at midnight. We hadn't seen a single nurse at all that day. No one came into check on any of us. DH was fed up at that point.
That said Belle and I really did have great care and we will have our second there as well. Plus all the doctors at my OB are all amazing and I couldn't even consider having another with out any of them as doctors. As others have said its clean, up to date, and the private rooms are huge.
I delivered DS #1 and Suburban and DS #2 at Childrens. I had a MUCH better experience at Children's. That said, I recently followed my OB's to their new practice (4 women that split off to start their own) and they deliver at Sisters. If we have a 3rd (which we very much hope for) they will be delivered at Sisters. I like the piece of mind with having a NICU. Suburban does not have one. Neither of my boys needed to be in the NICU, but it would have been scary had DS#1 been sent to Childrens and I had to stay at Suburban.
My experience with Suburban was that it was very busy the day I delivered. I ended up having a completely natural/unmedicated delivery even though I really wanted an epidural. It felt like they were just ignoring me in the room while I was vomitting and DH kept looking out in the hall and asking for someone to come in and help. By the time they were ready to call the anesth. they said he was doing a c-section and then they checked me again and I was 10 cm. I felt like I had different nurses checking on me every time and they were actually really strict about when you could have the baby in your room. You were never allowed to fall asleep or turn the lights off in the room if the baby was in the room. I guess they are just being overly precautious, but it made it hard in the middle of the night after I nursed him and would be hitting the call button for them to come take him back to the nursery. It took forever for them to come back to get him.
It could have been that things were just easier for me the 2nd time around. The shower situation at Children's is not ideal. You don't have your own shower in your room. You have to go down the hall and use a floor shower which is odd. I don't have any problems with parking at Children's, but then again we go there every few months for all of Reed's appointments so I am super comfortable there. If your practice delivers at both Suburban and WCHOB you may not really have a choice. I was not given an option the first time since I was not high risk. My new OB in the southtowns just happens to deliver at WCHOB, but usually the only people that deliver there are high risk.
i delivered at surburban, i personally have mixed reviews; i didn't mind the c-section but part of me thinks that after delivering 12 or so babies that day they just wanted to get me in and out. my first room was awful, no heat control it was hotter than the sun, but i was eventually moved after one day to a different room. i know they have updated several wings since so that might be all fixed now. some of the nurses were great, others not so much but i would imagine that is the same at any hosp. and varies by shift too. i will say though that they were all overwhelmingly concerned with my (non-existant) pain level and wanted me medicated all.the.time.
a friend of mine just had her baby there a month ago and they keep the babies in your room now, this is new. M was in the nursery at night- when i remembered to call the nurses to take him (i was repremanded at several times for that)
Thank you ladies! I def plan to take a tour with my husband in the coming months to get a better feel. But it's so hard to decide so I appreciate you sharing your experiences!
Thanks for sharing, I thought I heard from recent moms on other boards that babies were kept in the room. And P.S. Michael Joseph is a name we are thinking of if it's a boy!
