Upstate NY Babies

Vent-Updated!

Okay, there's a huge backstory to this vent, but the main point would be when a Dr. says they want to get you right in, how is over a month "right in"?!

When I was in my 3rd trimester with J, I had some strange symptoms, bad itching and my liver enzymes were really high.  They diagnosed it as Cholestasis of Pregnancy, got the itching under control and did BPP 2x a week, NST every other day (the risk of stillbirth goes up with the condition).  But they weren't really ever positive wth happened, except there was some sort of malfunction/injury between my liver and gallbladder and scans showed my gallbladder having "sludge" in it (yes, that's the term!).  After I had J, I was totally fine, all functions normal.

So I've been concerned about my liver enzymes since I got pregnant this time and had b/w done on 8/8 for life insurance.  Yep, liver enzymes are elevated.  Had b/w done on 8/16 for my OB, yep, the #'s are 16 pts higher than the 8th.  The #'s are still lower than my worst set of #'s with J, so that's good, but I'm also not even halfway through the pregnancy like I was when I had those #'s drawn.  So my OB says on Tues, to see a GI specialist, have them do a full workup on my liver and see if there is some strange condition that is showing itself in pregnancy.  First I have to go see my primary care dr and get a referral though, so that was yesterday.  When I heard back from the GI place, my appt is for Oct. 19th.  Really? I called them back and asked to be put on their cancellation list.  Oh and my OB said to fully expect that this is Cholestasis coming back and that the itching will very likely come back (90% chance of reoccurance).  I don't care about the itching, that can be controlled through meds.  I care about the risk of stillbirth or any damage to this baby or its liver.  Her main concern is if it comes back when I'm in the 20's, or the 30's (weeks).

I know there's nothing I can do about it and stressing isn't going to help, but that's always easier said than done Tongue Tied  If you made it through all that and followed-thanks for letting me vent!

  • What is it with GI doctors and allergists?  When Liam had his intusussection the ped was very adiment about getting him to a GI ASAP.  They scheduled us 6 weeks out.  I told the ped and she called and got the appt. moved.  The GI made me feel like I was lying about the severity of the case.  Maybe you're doctor could call and explain the situation and how important it is that you get in ASAP?  It's so frustrating.  Hang in there!  PS...did you come out on FB yet?

I second calling your OB to see if they are comfortable with that wait time or if they would call on your behalf.

This this this. A month during pregnancy can bring HUGE changes, moreso than other times. Not the same, but I know a guy DH works with needed to get in to see an oncologist about a spot on his lung and they scheduled him a month out. I would think that would be the kind of thing that is urgent enough to get in right away.

  • And there's like 8 drs, plus NP in this GI office!  Maybe I will call my OB and see if she can get me anywhere.

We haven't come out on FB, and not really for any particular reason.  And everyone in "real life" knows about it so I'm kind of shocked no one has said something.  We have our anatomy scan in a few weeks so maybe then, lol.

  • I agree with everyone's suggestion of trying to see if the OB can get you an appt somewhere sooner.

I'm so sorry you are going through this! I'll send some prayers your way that everything works out ok for you.

  • I'm so sorry.  I'll never understand why specialists are so hard to get in to.  Definitely try calling your OB to see if they can get you in sooner.  DH had a suspicious looking mole.  Our family doctor wanted it evaluated immediately by a dermatologist.  He called for the appointment and was given one 11 MONTHS away!  Our doctor was able to call and get him in the next week.
  • Thanks ladies :)  I called the OB office and she's not there today, which I swear she usually is on Thursdays (how dare she change her schedule w/o letting me know).  So one of her nurses is going to call back, which is fine, but it's not like the nurse was in the room while we were having the discussion so who knows where I'll get.

  • I'm sorry you are going through that- I'm having the same difficulty with my primary- they wanted to get me "right in" and the appt is in 5 weeks...right around the time I'm supposed to have my c-sec- oh well...

I hope that your levels dont continue to rise or at least they can maintain them through out the pregnancy...

  • The GI place called yesterday afternoon and had a cancellation for today at 2, so I took it!  We'll see how it goes!
