Teachers: Snacking in front of kids

I teach 8th grade, and I'm about 6 1/2 weeks pregnant. M/S hit hard this morning, although it has been around for a few mornings. I really need to eat something frequently or the nausea comes back. I hate to eat in front of my students, but I also don't want to puke on them.

How are you handling it?

Re: Teachers: Snacking in front of kids

  • With my first, I let the principals know pretty early so they would understand why I was snacking during class.  If my students (6th-8th grade) asked why I was eating during class, I'd usually just say something like, it's a privilege of being a teacher and not a student.  I would keep a sleeve of saltines in my desk and a ginger ale in the room just in case.  Once I told them, they looked back and understood.  Haven't had that problem yet this time, but I'll probably handle it the same way.

  • I eat something in between classes as fast as I can. If I can't finish fast enough, I wait to start class until I'm done. I have to eat.

  • When I was teaching, I would snack between my groups. I know this is not always that easy when you have a class that stays with you all day. Which was my case some day, if I had a student question me on why I was snacking I told them I had an upset tummy and needed something to settle it since most of the time I was eating crackers. If I had something else I used I did not get to eat my breakfast this morning. Eventually when I told them that I was having a baby they all understood that I needed to eat more frequently then they did. Honestly kids understand. I was teaching 2/3 and 4th grades at the time.
  • I teach grade 3/4 and have always been really open with snacking in my class, if one of my students is hungry I let them eat ~ not a big deal to me.  I have had a pack of saltines on my desk since school started and I just grab a few and eat them while my kids are working, totally not a big deal.  I think because I have had such an open policy my kids don't even ask me or mention that I am eating.

  • With my last pregnancy, I snacked during the transitions, before they came and after they left.  If I needed somthing while teaching, I would eat a lifesaver mint, sip on ginger ale.  They hardly even took notice.

  • We're on block schedule, so 76 min classes. Those transitions are few and far between :(

My intern is teaching, and I just downed a Sheetz blueberry muffin!

  • I am also a teacher and snack when I get hungry or feel sick. I wouldnt even worry about it. You need to take care of yourself first and foremost, so snack away!
  • I am a teacher too and I have been just snacking here and there.  I told my kids I have an upset tummy (3rd graders) and they don't seem to mind now.  I haven't told them about baby, wanna wait until 2nd tri.  Anyway, I know how you feel...eating something seems to be the only way to keep the nausea away..... yuck!

  • So far I haven't snacked in front of my students, except for my journalism class. That is my only class that I allow food in. I am a firm believed in leading by example and following my own class rules. Even if it means I have to quickly eat during each passing period, that is what I do.

  • My students already know (4th/5th Grade) and they have been very supportive.  Once I was feeling really sick and one of them told me not to think about it and to think about unicorns.  It actually helped.  LOL.

  • I'm 4th grade and occasionally will snack. They've noticed but have never asked why.  If they do, I will tell them that sometimes if I don't have a snack, I will get sick.  The only time I hid it was when one of my kiddos was fasting.  I just sucked it up till lunch that week.

This.  I tell my kids healthy snacks are okay if they need them.  (We have a really early lunch, so many kids need/want something before the end of the day).  I just make sure I have healthy snacks so that I follow my own rule.  Definitely not an issue where I work at all.

I'm the exact same way.  I teach in a pretty low-income area and the kids are always hungry.  I have crackers that I give out and eat all the time so snacking in front of the kids is no different for me.

  • I teach elementary school music so I have snacks at my desk that I eat really quickly between classes.  I really don't like to snack while standing in front of the class but maybe if you give them independent work to do at their desk you can snack.  I also know some teachers snack while their kids have snack.  Not sure if your kids still have snacks in 8th grade.

  • I teach elementary art full time and it takes me an hour to drive in, so shortly after school starts I am already hungry for a snack.  As soon as I send the kids off to work on their art, I get my snack and sit down at a table and chat with some of the students while I eat.  They don't seem to mind and they seem to enjoy my company and special attention they get during my daily snack times.  There is no passing time in between classes, so I have to eat during class.  I am lucky to have a bathroom and lots of sinks right in my room.  I had my husband sneak in a mini fridge as well in case I didn't have any time to leave the room. :)
  • I'm currently student teaching 7th and 8th grade.  My host teacher LOVES telling the kids that the only drink he allows in the classroom is water, and then takes a big swig of coffee.  Teachers go by different rules, when they grow up, they can eat at work too!  We have different dress codes too!  They should be used to teachers having different rules to go by.  If you don't want to go that route, if they ask, just say your stomach is upset and it helps you feel better.
