TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Temp break? Is it worth it?

Temping really doesn't stress me out. But I keep thinking it would be nice to take a little break from it and only use OPKs for my med break.

For someone as irregular as I am, going off the meds so who knows if i'll ovulate or not... would it be worth it? I could probably take 3 weeks off, and then start up. Or just start up when the OPKs get darker. I might not be able to exactly pin point ovulation, but right now that doesn't really matter to me.

Any experience? Any advice?

Re: Temp break? Is it worth it?

  • It is nice to not have to temp every day, but on the other hand its nice to be able to confirm you ovulated (even if you can't pinpoint it to the exact day)

I'd probably take a couple weeks off and then start back up (unless after a couple weeks you're just not feeling it and want to wing it this cycle!)

  • I hated temping. HAAATED it. So giving it up permanently was such a relief for me. I just used the CBEFM (which might be a problem with your long cycles) and OPKs and felt as liberated as one of those women running through a field of daisies in a tampon commercial.

    Do it. Doooo iiiiit!

See, I don't hate temping. But I took a week off when we were on vacation and it was nice... so i'm thinking it'll be nice once again.

I had the CBEFM, and with the monitoring I stopped using it. I'm now trying to sell it on Craigslist. I always liked OPKs anyways.

But I think i'll do it!!! I'll probably cave once my OPKs start looking darker... but from now till then, no more temping! This is scary.

  • I have stopped temping a couple of times.  The first time was because I was tired of it, I mean I have to wake up at 1am.  Some nights I will not get to bed until 8:30/9, some nights I would toss and turn.  This time I stopped when we got DH's first SA results, I just didn't see the point in temping if there was no chance of getting KU.

Here is my list.  Pros: SLEEP, no wondering if you remembered to temp or not.  CONS: I never know when to expect AF, or if I am actually ovulating.

I would say do it.  It is really nice, stick with the OPKs.  That is my plan for awhile.  Let us be anti-temping buddies.  lol

Sounds like a plan!!! I will probably cave around +OPK time. But without meds i'm not expecting that to be until 20+ days from now!

  • I'm torn too on the temping thing.  I actually haven't temped for a few cycles now.  It was just too annoying to do everyday and I felt like all I was doing was checking the FF app on my phone 1,000 times a day as if something would magically change.  Now, I still check my phone app, but since my VIP has lapsed and I'm not temping I really have nothing to look at.  Tongue Tied

It is a little liberating to take a break from it all though.  If it isn't really important to you to know when you ovulated then maybe take a break for a cycle or two.

ps: I saw your reply about the storms.  I'm so sorry!  I hope everyone around you was ok and that you can all lean on each other to rebuild.  I can only imagine!

I get more crazy if I don't have a temp data. But, given your specific situation, I'd knock off the temping, use OPKs and when I had a medium tone OPK, I'd start temping just for a week or so to try and catch a temp spike, then go back to no temping.

This is probably what i'm going to do! That's a good 20+ day break in the beginning for me! This will be nice.

  • I say go for it...I haven't been temping during our TTA cycles and I don't think I'm going to during this IUI cycle.  It is SO nice to not have to think about that first thing when I wake up.

  • I'm an all or nothing girl!  I don't mind temping...it just becomes routine.  But I would really like to take a break from all of it.  Peeing on sticks and seeing small cups of urine sitting on the counter isn't fun for me.  If you can handle not temping and just opks, then go for it!  I would go nuts. lol

  • I prefer to temp while we're TTA right now rather than go with OPKs actually (I have no idea when to use them and with PCOS I can't always trust the results anyway, so I tend not to use them) since it's free and keeps me in touch with what's going on. And since I never know when/if I'm going to ovulate and have irregular cycles, I like knowing what's going on. But that's just me :)

This totally.  Using OPK's for 50 days w/o seeing anything is enough to drive me insane!   With temping, I don't get my hopes up for another line to appear (and I'm half asleep so it's not stress inducing, lol).   I don't like the ambiguity of not knowing when AF will show up either.  I personally would chose temping over OPKS.  Just my 2cents.

And Cashew - I was so sorry to hear about cd1  :(
