Mine was about 5-10 mins long, it was quite painful, so yes, medicate before hand. I know a lot of girls here didn't have a whole lot of pain. It is very case by case, but take the meds anyway, just in case! Good luck!

It dosen't last that long at all but like mentioned before it is case by case. I think it depends on the Dr. and how gentle they are. I let my gal know that I was extremely nervous and I think that made them more concious of being sensetive. There were 2 gals in there with me. one performing the HSG and another gal who held my hand. It is over before you even have time to think about it. Good luck.
It is a pretty easy test and should only take between 5-10minutes. Pain is a case by case basis, I didn't have much pain but to be on the safe side I took 3 extra strength tylenol before going.

I took motrin about an hour before my appointment. As mentioned, the pain/uncomfortableness is on a case by case basis, but mine was more of an uncomfortable pain, than horrible pain. I did have a lot of cramping afterward, but again.....case by case.
The one nurse in the room, continued to remind me to breath, etc, so that helped a LOT too.
my doctor gave me a high dose ibuprofen to take before the procedure. it did hurt. i got a little relief when they had me rock from side to side. They were trying to see if the liquid made through the tube. But yes, if you have some medicine to take, take it.
I was an extream case I think--I actually passed out and convulsed during mine. They think that I might have had an allergic reaction to the iodine or that my left tube was greatly blocked (that is what they are looking at now in my upcoming lap). It was pretty frightening--once I came to I was all contorted and couldn't move any limb or muscle--my hands were like claws. I had never heard of that happening to anyone before so I'm hoping it was the iodine!!
Re: hsg
It did hurt but the pain was fleeting.
I went out for a margarita afterwards!
I would take the motrin.
