Zumba or Fitness Instructor

Is anyone a Zumba or Fitness Instructor? I am a Zumba Instructor, which is high cardio. I am about 11.5 weeks and have been teaching consistantly before and during this pregnancy. I teach 4 days a week.

I feel as if the doctors in my practice are not on the same page, as one has told me it is fine to continue what I was doing before I got pregnant and another that has told me to take it down to low impact and make sure that my heartrate doesn't rise above 120 - which I am reading 140 on very good reference sources online. I always monitor myself to make sure I am not overheating myself or becoming short of breathe. If I need a break, I take it, and I drink plenty of water!

Are you in my position or have you been? Did you continue with your instructing? I don't want to think too far into it, but I just have some worries obviously, making sure that I am okay and doing the right thing.

Re: Zumba or Fitness Instructor

  • I'm not an instructor, but I do take a zumba class and I asked my ob-gyn about it. She told me not to jump but otherwise it is fine so long as I don't overheat. She also told me to stop in between each song and drink some water. Otherwise, she sounded like it would be ok for me to continue in the class as long as I feel up to it.

  • I teach Bodycombat and Bodypump and taught both past my due date (my son was 10 days late).

I listened to my body and all was fine.  The 140 reference is outdated.  I was really lucky that my OB was totally on board, but you should be fine to listen to your body.  You will make the necessary modifications.

  • I am a Zumba instructor and am still teaching 5 days a week. My heart rate I try to avg around 150. If I do start to feel like I am overdoing it I just put in a low impact song. Seems to help. I am in a little tougher of a spot because I rent the space not work for someone so if I stop I just lose money.

  • I'm a zumba instructor. Right now I teach 2 classes a week and take about 3-4 additional ones. My midwife was super supportive with my instructing. She encouraged me to continue doing what I am doing since my body is used to it. She said just listen to your body and don't follow the outdated 120-140 heartbeat. She said everyone's different in there levels of difficulty. I have had a really great experience and my students are super supportive! They see it as a motivation that if the preggo can do it - so can we! Lol. Good luck!
