Pregnant after IF

XP- 3rd u/s and still in limbo

Hi Ladies!

My betas are all in my siggy... basically 2 weeks ago we found out that they were still very low and only doubling 1x/week, which has made my RE concerned that I'm at a high risk for m/c.

I had my 3rd u/s on Tuesday... the baby grew appropriately from the previous week and was measuring at about 7 weeks, and we saw- and heard!- the heartbeat which was so incredible. Then I got the call with my bloodwork results and my beta is still really low and has only doubled once since last week... it went from 8500 to 18100. The other concern is my progesterone levels- they are on the low end of normal (12-15) but it's concerning because I'm supplementing with vaginal suppositories so it means the pregnancy isn't producing much progesterone on it's own.

My RE told me there is still a chance this could all result in a normal pregnancy but we should remain cautious and take it one day at a time. I go back in another week to do this all over again. I am so nervous and I so desperately want everything to end up okay. I'm trying to focus on the fact that my ultrasounds have been normal and that is a good sign, but I also want to be as realistic as possible.

Any insight, advice or wisdom is definitely welcome! Thanks for reading this long post, I really appreciate it!

Re: XP- 3rd u/s and still in limbo

  • ((hugs))  Being in limbo is awful.  I'm sorry you are going through this.

Two things:  First, when HCG levels are above 6000, the doubling time is over 96 hours.  So, I wouldn't be too terribly concerned about the betas (I know, it's easier said than done!).

Also, if you are using progesterone suppositories, I don't think that they register in your blood work.  Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought b/c of the where you are putting the progesterone (versus using PIO) that it did not register in your bloodwork.

Did you find out what the hb was??

Good luck and sending you lots of keep growing vibes!

Thanks so much for your input.

The hb was 130 which my RE was happy with for 7 weeks. And I've also read that same info about the betas doubling every 96 hrs at a certain point, but I think what's freaking me out is that my RE seems so pessimistic! I've loved him and he's been great up until this point, and maybe he's just being realistic and knows more about this than I do, but he keeps saying things like "it's a bit too early to schedule a d&c" and I really don't appreciate that.

Also- good to know about the suppositories... I hadn't thought of that.

  • Yes limbo is awful! Several of us girls have had similar experiences. My betas are in my wiggy but weren't checked after my last one at 600. My baby measured small and was over a week behind until week 10. Even now at my u/s Tuesday, baby was JUST 19 weeks which I am exactly. I hope it all works out for you! I know it's torture :(

I don't believe that God ever tells us "no". he has three options. Yes, not right now, or I have something better in mind. We just have to wait & see. BabyFetus Ticker

Just wanted to say I love the quote you have in your siggy.

So beautiful. I'm going to have to write that one down! Thanks for your input and I wish you the best during your pregnancy.

  • Ditto, May... at this point, u/s supersedes betas... I can't imagine why they're even still doing them!  They start leveling off after a certain point, so don't stress about the doubling.  Seeing baby grow, develop and maintain a good heartbeat is way more important and you're seeing that!

Also, your P4 isn't horrible, it's just low of normal.  You're on vaginal supps which aren't reflected in your P4 draw.  If you were on PIO you would expect to see that reflected in b/w, but vaginal supps don't show up in that number so you should be fine... not sure why your RE seems so pessimistic.

I'm not saying things still couldn't take a turn for the worse, obviously I can't know that, but I would be optimistic about things if I were in your shoes and not listen to your RE!  :)
