Two Under 2

Crying at bathtime

DS who is 2 cries when it's bathtime. He started it within the last month or so. He used to LOVE the tub. He has always hated having his hair washed, I think it's having the water wash over his face that he really hates. He freaks out if I try to have him lay back in the water to wash his hair. I try to do it to avoid getting water on is face but gave up b/c he'd freak out. So I just poured water over his head and tried my best to keep it out of his face. I've tried washing DS in the shower with me thinking he'd freak out a little less but he still screamed.

Yesterday I got him in the tub, although screaming, washed his body and then let him play. He happily played when he realized I wasn't going to wash his hair and even lies in the tub on his belly to swim. I realize I need to wash his hair at some point but how do I do it w/out making him hate the tub again?

I would love some tips. I'm so sad he hates bath time when he used to enjoy it so much.

Re: Crying at bathtime

  • My 18mo. old does the same thing, I know its not any help, but all we do is use the tear free shampoo and try our best to keep it out of her face.  Are you sure its the hair washing?  Wish we had a better solution too. :(

  • my nephew does this and my SIL solution is to give him a washcloth to cover his face.

I use This to wash my kids hair and it keeps the water off their face if you hold it against their scalp.

  • I forgot to add that I only wash their hair every other days unless they get food or something in it.

  • I have the same problem, and someone suggested using swim goggles. I haven't tried it but I know how frustrating it is and I hope it gets better!

Great idea. I'm going to order one.

It's great to know my kid isn't the only one with a problem like this. Hopefully he grows out of it soon. I bought him some bubble bath and am trying like heck to make the tub a fun place again. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold off washing his hair, ewwww.
