maybe dumbest ? ever...collapsing nipple?

we're currently working on LO being able to take a bottle...try to do 1 feeding from DH or someone else a day.

We've discovered he "likes" the medella bottles/nipples best so far...tried Dr. Brown's and Born Free...

My question is...how do you know if your nipple is collapsing?  It takes him like 5 minutes or so to actually get the hang of it but once he latches on to the nipple it basically all goes into his mouth and bends with his sucking.  But he seems to get good pulls of milk when he latches like this?  Is this wrong...?  When he does the easy sucking motion he doesn't get any milk out?

dumb question #1 of the day for me....hadn't fed alot of babies from a bottle prior to LO! lol

  • The Medela nipples collapse when the baby has sucked a bunch of milk out and not let any air back in (because of the pressure).

DS prefers the Medela bottles too.  I just need to gently un-latch him every couple minutes, when it seems like he's not really getting much milk anymore, let the air rush in, and then he can latch again.  You don't have to get the nipple all the way out of his mouth, just break the suction.

  • Dr. Brown's bottle nipples never collapse.  That is one of their strong selling points.  I have been using them from day 1 and have never seen it collapse.  I believe I read in their FAQ's if the nipple on your Dr. Brown's bottle is collapsing it means you are screwing the bottle way too tight.  B/c of the unique Dr. Brown's venting system you are just supposed to put the bottle together snugly not super tight otherwise it can't vent right and you can get leakage and collapsing.

Never say never!  lol.  My daughter was always collapsing the Dr. Browns Nipples.  And the Tommee Tippee nipples.  I found that the Dr. Browns were too soft for her and even the slowest flow was too fast for her.  Now we use Playtex Ventaire Advanced, which have a very firm nipple and they have not caved in on her.  I never believed that your baby would determine which bottles she liked, but my baby certainly proved me wrong!

  • If the nipples keep collapsing on the medela bottles, try not screwing the lid on so tight....I have noticed that helps quite a bit. :)
