how is this possible?

Was diagnosed last week with GD and had my 2nd appt with the dietician this morning.  All morning I felt like baby girl was punching me in the bladder.  Every once in a while I would get a strong jabbing feeling and then feel like I needed to pee.  So I get to the office and the nurse has me leave a urine sample.  I notice right away something in the sample.  The nurse looks at it, checks the urine and says there is blood in the urine and the item in the urine looks to her like a kidney stone.  We aren't talking about a little grain of sand.  This was a full on pebble.  How in the world did I pass a kidney stone and not know it?  They sent it off to pathology to get a full analysis.  I am just baffled.

  • yikes!! you should be thankful to not know lol i  hear those are typically extremely painful!

hopefully all the tests turn out to be good besides the stone.

another plus side- maybe labor pain wouldn't be so bad, since you can pass a kidney stone like superman :)

Haha! I agree, maybe you have a super human capacity for pain!

I hope everything goes well and you're feeling well. It will be interesting to hear what pathology says!

Not my first child.  Trust me not super human.  I absolutely felt every labor pain with my first but didn't know i was having contrations until i was about 4 cms dilated.

  • Wow that is crazy I have never heard of that before. I have heard people say that kidney stones hurt worse than labor.

Kind of my thinking too which is why i insisted it get tested.  Wonder if it could be something besides a kidney stone??  It was a solid mass and about the size of the pebbles you put in the bottom of a fish tank though.  Sure do think I would feel it "pass"  but maybe wasn't produced in the kidney where it would cause so much pain????  I just don't know.  I had a kidney infection when pregnant with my son that put me in the hospital for 3 days a month before he was born.  I just don't want to be in that situation again.  That was crazy painful and there were no stones even involved.

Definitely let us know what they say about it. I am very curious. I think you would still have felt some pain no matter where it was produced but I don't know that for sure.

  • There is some hydronephrosis of pregnancy so if the stone wasn't huge might not have been a problem passing to the bladder.... and you can pass stone from kidney to bladder at time X then bladder out later at time Y.... and there is such a thing as bladder stones, which are more common when your bladder doesn't completely empty and if ever there was a time when that was happening it is during pregnancy.... but you may never know!

  • Wow.  You're like one of those "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" people :)

Don't over think how it could be possible, just be glad that's how it happened :)

  • I will have to follow this.  If it was a kidney stone and you passed it without feeling it I am jealous.  When I pass kidney stones the pain actually makes me throw up.  I was told even a stone the size of a grain of sand would be painful.  Let us know what they find out.
