Multiples

What was your most surprising PG issue?

Just curious about what you BTDT MoMs found surprising about your multiples pregnancies.  I knew the risks and care for twins would be different than what I experienced with my singletons, but I'm kinda shocked at the physical differences. I'm only 21 weeks and I'm having such bad pelvic girdle pain that I can barely walk by the end of my day.  What was your hardest or most surprising symptom?

  • Carpal tunnel; had no idea how painful it could be, or even that it was a pregnancy symptom.

  • Just the weight pulling down. Sure, I had GD, PIH and swelled something fierce. But it was the weight of the babies that was awful.

I totally ran around the halls after my C section, it felt so good to be relieved of the weight! The nurse told me to slow down...

    This!

Plus the amount of swelling I exprienced!  The belly nor my back hurt at all (yes, sore at times, but nothing to complain about), but the swelling in the legs was actually painful!  I was so scared after I delivered that they would never go back to normal, or worse that if the water retention went away, they would stay wrinkly and loose!  : (  However, that was not the case, thank the Lord.

  • That's I'd go on bedrest for so many months. I knew that it happened to half of all MoMs, but I just didn't think it would happen to me. Also, like Babsie, I didn't expect the carpal tunnel and that it would last so long after I delivered. It really messed up my wrists.
  • I agree with carpal tunnel. It came on so suddenly for me and it hurts! I also have cholestasis but luckily the medicine I'm on for it is finally working and I'm not itching as much!!

  • Definately the pelvic pain. If I was on my feet for more then 30 minutes I could barely walk the rest of the day (this was towards the end)

One very suprising thing was 3 days after delivering, I had to stay in the hosp 2 extra days because my BP was high. I didn't have high BP any other time during my pregnancy or right after delivery, just the few days after. odd.

  • the carpal tunnel sucked, for sure. i would reach in my purse and not be able to feel anything. very weird.

the ITCHING. oh god, the itching. i had a PUPPPS rash that lasted until at least 6 weeks after birth.

but the weirdest thing was how WIDE my nose got.

  • I knew I would have BP issues- each of my sisters had it with each of their pregnancies - 6 total.  So I was not surprised- actually I was surprised that it held off as long as it did- 31 weeks.  But I was not happy about the terrible swelling after- my legs were swollen from my hip to my toes.  And since I still had BP issues they gave me a water pill- yep that cleared them up in a day or two.

Definitely this.  It sucked to have no feeling in my hands.

Also I got a random nosebleed when I was about 15 weeks PG.  Freaked me right out.

  • The pain in my ribcage from baby B being so high up. WAY way way worse than childbirth. Seriously it felt like someone was tearing apart my ribs. I've never had to take pain medicine, but in the hospital they drugged me up beyond comprehension and I would wake up and ask for more just to avoid the rib pain.
  • I have either PUPPPs or cholestasis (should have results at the end of the week), and I hadn't heard of either before I even began itching. So that's the worst one for me so far. The only other thing that I wasn't prepared for was when your hair just stops growing. I love not having to shave my legs every day and stay smooth, but I was worried it was a vitamin deficiency or something!

As far as things I wasn't prepared for, I didn't realize how amazing it feels to feel the twins moving around in there. It's impossible to describe to other people who haven't felt it before (like my husband). I'm going to miss them being inside!

  • Carpal tunnel was terrible for me too. I also had hellish pelvic pain from about 22 weeks until delivery and tons of nosebleeds, average 2x a day for months. These were the things no one warned me about!

  • I couldn't ever close my legs (I know, that's how I got into that position) but the day before I delivered DS1 I got a pedicure and the guy kept pushing my knees together like they would actually stay if he did.

  • Swelling and pelvic instability.

I just ended PT last week, and my boys are almost 11 months!  I started PT at 18 weeks pregnant.

The swelling in my feet was insane!

  • How bad it hurt to walk and I was only 18 weeks pregnant. I remember trying to go X-mas shopping and only being able to shop a couple of hours before I would have to go home. I was so glad to have a desk job.

  • Another vote for PUPPPS and carpal tunnel. The c/s recovery was painless compared to the itching. And I still lose feeling in my wrist if I push the stroller too long, even after wearing a night brace for months.

  • Shrek feet!  My feet and ankles were HUGE and swollen the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy (although being on bedrest for three weeks helped that a bit).

Also, the itchy stomach and horrendous acid reflux were fun as well.  I popped TUMS like candy. :)

  • For me it was how fast I got tired and slowed down. By 24 weeks I didn't even want to walk to my bus stop for work anymore and it's one block away! Also didn't expect to take my college bio final in the hospital, but I passed!

  • PUPPS! I honestly thought I was going to tear my skin off. I had never heard of it before I got it.

The most difficult preg related problem was pre-e. I was really surprised by that one. I got it bad and had to do bed rest at the hospital for a while before they decided to deliver my girls.

  • I am lucky in that I didn't really have any symptoms that I didn't expect (although the back pain was way worse than anything I could have predicted.)  My biggest surprise was how quickly everything changed from having a nearly complication free pregnancy to delivering prematurely.  Based on my pregnancy, I never would have thought I would have my boys as early as I did and everything changed for the worse within a week and that was it.

All of this. I'm still having pelvic pain, especially after I sit or lay on one side for a period of time. Much better than before, but still can get really, really uncomfortable.

Ditto on the BP. I've never had high BP at all - my OB kept telling me how awesome it was throughout the pregnancy. After delivery, it got so high they wouldn't let me out of the hospital bed for mroe than a few minutes at a time because they said I was a stroke risk. I had to take BP pills for a month after delivery.

Also, the swelling post-partum. I had some during, but nothing compared to what I had afterward. I was surprised it happened to such an extent after the babies were born. Think this is what caused the HBP.

  • This is my first pregnancy so I don't know how it compares to a singleton but I'm already walking like I'm disabled. My entire body aches in the morning when I get out of bed. One baby is laying on my sciatic so I have constant pain from my lower back down to my butt. I feel like I have arthritis in my fingers. And my feet look like "loaves of bread" accordingly to my husband. I feel like a complainer but I honestly didn't expect to be this uncomfortable. No one prepared me for this.

  • What really surprised me is that I went from a completely uncomplicated and normal pregnancy to being told I was in PTL and had an incompetent cervix. I thought I would go full term and not have any issues. Dang body just gave up on me.

  • The swelling was insane in my feet.  I could only fit into 1 pair of flip flops by the end.  The heartburn.  I didn't even know what heartburn was until I was a little later in pregnancy.  Twice I actually got up and puked and thought I was sick.  DH had to tell me it was probably HB.

Hip pain was by far the WORST symptom I experienced.  I couldn't sleep in any position because the pain on my hip was so bad.

This is exactly what I was planning on responding with!  But thankfully it went away almost immediately after delivery.
