Nanny raises

Do you give your Nanny annual raises??  And if you do how much of a raise do you give??

I am not expecting or planning on having any other LO's soon so it wouldnt be a raise with more responsibility.  I just want to make sure I do what's right, especially b/c we are in love with out nanny.

Thanks!!

Re: Nanny raises

  • Well, our first nanny hit her year mark in the thick of the economic downturn. DH and I got no raises and no bonus, so unfortunately, we decide to not give nanny a raise. It was simple economics.

Our current nanny is close to hitting a year with us, but truthfully, we will be letting her go in 6 weeks when I go on maternity leave, so we are not going to worry about it.

I think had circumstances been differenent either time around, we would have done a 2-5% raise.

My company hasn't given raises in years and my DH actually had a $10k salary reduction this year so our belts are tight.  Do you think a nice bonus would be good enough because it will be hard to swing a big raise.

This is just our first LO/first nanny and I really dont want to loose her b/c I didnt know what to do.

  • I remember posting about this back when I was facing this situation and there is a clear dividing line...there are those that think 'omg...this person is taking care of your child...how can you possibly not give a raise' and then there is the other side which is 'raises are not promised/guaranteed and if the economics do not support a raise, then that is how it goes".

Personally, I think if you give a bonus when your income has gone down, that you are very generous. I did explain the situation to our nanny, so she understood why we were not giving a raise.

  • We gave our nanny a raise every year in January (coincidentally that was her anniversary with us) and gave her ~5% increase each time (basically, a cost-of-living adjustment).  During the first three years she worked with us (and received raises), there was no change in her terms...she cared for my one daughter.

  • I work from home so I mostly lurk on this board but when I was in college I was a nanny for several different families. Each year I was given a 1 dollar an hour raise. It wasn't expected but definitely appreciated. If you cant swing a raise what about trying to give her one paid day off a month or something like that?
