Food Allergy

Early signs of allergy/sensitivity while breastfeeding?

So, over the last two or three days my six week old has developed a raging case of baby acne, only on her face. I've noticed that while nursing, she is decidedly red around the acne-like bumps. I'm wondering if this isn't acne at all but a rash and a reaction to something in my breastmilk? Curious if anyone else had a similar experience! Thanks, ladies. I lurk on this board and learn so much!!!!

  • i'm amazed that you even thought about a possibility of food allergy. (it took me 7 months).  It could be or it could be baby acne, the only way to find out is to perhaps give up dairy/soy for 2 - 4 weeks and see how her skin is after her feedings. then add it back to your diet and see if her skin worsens.  If it never clears, you can go as far as eliminating all the top allergens and pretty much doing an elimination diet, but i would just start with milk and soy.

i would also start a food journal (what foods are you eating and what are her reactions).

Many newborns have MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance) for their first year of life and many have an actual allergy and many just have baby acne.

  • My DS had eczema across his forehead/nasal bridge essentially from the first few days of life. We didn't even think about milk protein allergy until he was 8 wks. At that point both the pedi GI and pedi allergist said his rash was characteristic of milk allergy, and t cleared within a couple of wks of milk elimination from my diet. It didn't really look like acne, though, more a flaky irritated eczema. But perhaps if your LO is displaying other signs of an allergy or intolerance, an elimination diet would be good to try.

  • is it eczema or acne?  If it's eczema- then I'd guess allergy too.  If it's acne- it could just be baby acne.  If it gets worse while nursing- is she rubbing against something (like a breast pad/itchy bra fabric etc) whle she's eating?  That could be irritating the acne.

This.  And the first indication I had in DS was a rash on his face.  It occured to me that it could be but I guess I ignored it.  It wasn't until he got physically ill that I realized it was a dairy intolerance. Like Magdusia said it could be an allergy/sensitivity but it could be acne.  I would try cutting out dairy and see what happens.  A food journal is also a good idea but can be challenging because sometimes a reaction happens days after you have actually eaten the food.
