Upstate NY Babies

why is this so hard?

so for some reason- the past 2 weeks- L flipps out when we have to rinse the shampoo from his hair...we tried the visor but he pulled that off, we used to cradle him in the crook of our arm and pour a cup but now he'll try to "roll out" , we also have a large cup but trying to get him to look to the ceiling is impossible...

WTF is this about? I have tried asking him if he wants to do it or mommy do it, I have tried offereing options- last night was like wrestling a wet fish with one hand- and I wont give up washing his hair...

advice?

Re: why is this so hard?

  • We went through this with L.  It sounds mean but I would tell him, "ok here comes the water look up!"  and then say it again, and then just dump the water over his head.  He actually likes the water so to him it was funny, but after a few times he learned that if he looked up the water would stay out of his face.  And it's not like I was holding a hose over his head, it's just a little cup of water so it's really quick.

  • We went through that for a while. He hated getting water on his face, especially his eyes. We had to give him lots of warning that the water was coming, and treat it like a game. I also really love this cup. Once I got the hang of it, I get almost no water on his face when I rinse his hair.
  • Oh my word, I could have written this whole post. Suddenly Charlotte, who LOVED a bath, acts like you are dipping her in acid. And forget it with the hair washing and rinsing. The second I try to lean her back, she does this alligator death roll, but if I try to just get her to tip her head back she instead looks down and then ends up a sputtering mess. I actually got that cup, but we still haven't figured it out yet and I hate making bathtime something miserable when it was always something she used to like. I'm hoping she will kind of grow out of it, until then I guess it will just be the sputtering, water in the face, production it is.

  • I roll up a washcloth and put it on DD's forehead when I pour the water on her head. That way the washcloth absorbs the water before it gets to her eyes. I still have to do it really quickly though.

We use that cup too.  DS use to love taking a bath and recently he's having a fit the entire time.  I'm not sure if he's overtired by bath time or if it's just a phase.

We have that cup too.  I think part of our problem too is that when we were on vacation we didn't ahve a tub, only a stand up shower.  So L HAD to take a shower the entire week and he loved it.  He calls it rain and ask everynight to get in the rain.  haha!

  • I have no advice, we have a cup like that and Rosie still went through this phase. It went away on it's own but it was really frustrating!
  • Evan went through this and I would just say just 3 rinses...and count out loud 1-2-3 with each rinse and then say done, so he knew that it would be quick.

  • My DD went through this from about 2-4.  Not kidding.. so for like 2 years she would scream and cry.  Now she is ok with it, we have the visor and she also holds a dry washcloth in case she gets any water on her face (because she will flip out).
  • DD is 2 and still freaks about it. Bath time goes really well until its time to wash hair-then its usually crying until she gets out. I hate it!
  • We have been dealing with this with Reed basically forever.  He begs us not to wash his hair.  He will say "I will take a shower, but please don't wash my hair".  The best solution we have found is that we got him a little pair of goggles.  He wears the goggles before we wash his hair.  50% of the time he doesn't cry (which is an improvement to the 100% before the goggles).  I don't get it since he loves to jump in the pool and swim underwater.
  • My kids hate having their hair washed.  Right now Ty freaks as soon as I put shampoo in his hair, pretty much until it is gone.  I just dump the water over thier heads as quickly as possible, with one the other hand on their forehead minimizing the amount of water that actually goes over their face, most goes over my hand.  Kindof like my hand acting as a visor.  Sometimes just turning on the shower and letting them rinse that way is an eay option when they were really dirty and the water is dirty.  My kids LOVE dirt.
  • well this makes me feel better- that I'm not alone...but my dad said I never went through this so i thought it was just my boy being "mr.personality"- but good to know you all are dealing with it too...

  • Will he lay down on his back in the bath and then all you have to do is use you hand to rinse the shampoo out?  I still had to dump some fresh water on at the end with the conditioner, but at least it was just the once.  And my kid LOVES water, but even that she went thru a phase on.

Now, she likes it if I take turns.  So she stands up and I dump her belly, then her butt, then her head.  And do that a few times.  She knows it is coming and likes telling me.
