Re: Poll: Male or Female OB?

  • Female.  But I prefer female doctors in all specialties.  I work in a field with doctors doing administrative medicine and I find females to be more responsive/compassionate/attentive/knowledgable in general.

  • I have always had male doctors, but recently I met with one of the woman OB's in the practice and I loved her! So I may be switching it up.

  • Would I prefer a female OB over the male OB I have now? Sure. But as long as you went to school and you know what you're doing down there, more power to you.

  • My OB's (they work in a team) are all female, but my RE who I have been dealing with my entire pregnancy so far is a male and I'm totally okay with both.

  • I have a male OB and looooove hm. I honestly don't care about the sex of my doctors - just that we are compatible and they do a good job.

  • I had a male last time and this time I see all my Dr.s in my practice so I have to see both. It don't matter to me.

  • My first gyn was male (when I was a teenager-mid 20s) and I was fine with it.  I like my current obgyn though, who just happens to be female (though I wish she did more ultrasounds).  Like PP said, as long as the person has the credentials and a good manner, I'm cool with either sex.

  • I had the same OB/Gyn from the time I was 17 until he moved into specialty last year.  Now, I see another male at the same practice and I've never been uncomfortable with men.  They want me to see all docs in the practice b/c who knows who will be on call when I go into labor and I think there are 7 men and 1 woman.

  • I prefer a female, but my Dr is a male with a female midwife.

But honestly I like the male Dr better. He is friendly and warm where the midwife is colder and just clinical. As long as they take care of me and my baby, I don't care but I like people who are friendly.

Like when I worry about stupid stuff, my Dr laughs and jokes and makes me feel better. Midwife just stares at me like I'm dumb.

  • I prefer female, but there are multiple doctors at my practice, so I wind up seeing all of them throughout my pregnancy (a male Dr. delivered Ella). I always schedule my annual appointment with a female doctor.
  • It doesn't matter to me, but I do have a Female OB who I really love!

  • I've always gone to a male. He told me that if he can't make it to the birth that his wife will be the one. I thought that was pretty cool that they work together.

  • I always went to a female GYN and when I had my m/c I had a male OB.  I always thought I preferred women to men when it comes to looking at my vag, but my male OB was so phenomenal that it really doesn't matter to me anymore.

  • I have had only females for my OB/GYN care, but for my first set of twins I had to be rushed to a hospital with the best NICU due to my pre-e.  I ended up being in the care of a male doctor and I found that he was a really good coach when I was pushing.  He had a really good soothing voice and it was great.  I don't really care either way, I almost want to try a male doctor this time:)

  • My original gyn was an older male and I loved his bedside manner.  He always knew what was going on in your life (he would ask about school and stuff) and just made you feel very comfortable in general.

I moved to KY and tried an all woman practice that some friends suggested and did not like it at all.  The first doctor I saw had just toured my classroom the week before and spent my whole exam grilling me about my school.  She asked inappropriate questions as to what went on behind the scenes and how I felt about my principal--it was VERY uncomfortable.  I tried a different female doc the next time. I knew it would be my last appt before pregnancy, and I had several questions.  I felt very rushed and she gave off an extremely irritated vibe that I was coming closing to going over my 10 minute time slot.

When I got pregnant, I switched to another practice and happened to get a male dr.  I love him!!!!  He is very similar to my original doc and has an awesome bedside manner.

I know these isolated experiences don't account for all female/male doctors, but I definitely prefer a male over a female any day!

  • My OBGYN is a woman, but it really doesn't matter as long as I feel they're competent. I don't feel like it's a big deal.

Agreed, beside the fact I'll be damned if some man is going to tell me how something feels, or how painful it is. Can you imagine how you would feel if some man was telling you to suck it up and push? HA! I am not sure if they can kick you out of the hospital, but they would want to after that.
