DH and I just moved here a few months ago and we have finally gotten close enough to finished with unpacking to start exploring the area. I would love to know what you would consider some essential sights to see/festivals to go to/uniquely Seattle things to do. Could be touristy or not, outdoor stuff, museums, sports, we like lots of different things. We live on the peninsula but are willing to travel to downtown/the Eastside in the name of adventure. What would you recommend?
Re: fun Seattle stuff to do?
If you're at all into baseball or soccer, I would suggest a Mariner's game or Sounder's match (if there's good weather too). The views are amazing and there are plenty of great restaurants in the Pioneer Square/Pike Place area for some noshes.
Another fun day is hanging at Alki Beach. I'm a West Seattle-ite so I'm a little biased, but there are some amazing things to do in over here. You could also take the water taxi from Seattle (near the downtown ferries) to West Seattle and walk the path. If you do end up going, I highly recommend a restaurant called Sunfish -- they have quite possibly the best fish and chips ever.
DH and I moved here four years ago and the vast majority of my blog is about the amazing and fun things we have done since moving here. I haven't updated my blog in a few months (I need to get on it - so much to add), but there is a lot of information you can start pursuing. The link is in my signature.
Off the top of my head, here are some of my favorites:
--Fremont Solstice Festival (and parade with naked bicyclists)
--Ballard Neighborhood - Farmer's Market in this neighborhood is my favorite, great shopping area, the Locks, Golden Gardens Beach
--Tacoma Glass Museum is suprisingly interesting
--Fremont Neighborhood - one of our favorite neighborhoods to walk around in (must see the troll)

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far and please and keep them coming!
My commute to work includes the Bainbridge Island ferry, then walking by Pike Place Market on my way to the office. Long, but a way cool way to get to work
.
We're going to a Sounders game this weekend and will have a chance to do the downtown touristy things when my parents come to see us in a few weeks. I've heard several recommendations for the underground tour.
I love all the suggestions to explore some of the cool neighborhoods. That sounds like a lot of fun.
And KRoseToes, I'm so impressed all the stuff you've done and that you've managed to blog about it as well. I'll definitely keep checking back to your blog for new ideas as I need them.
Salmon Dinner and show at Tillicum Village, or just explore Blake Island - its a great place at low tide to see giant purple starfish and other creatures.
Golden Gardens and Alki are to great beaches.
The Fremont Troll mentioned before... its a fun surprise piece of art that you can climb on/around. Great photo op.
Volunteer Park is one of my favorite parks in Seattle. I think its because you drive through amazing houses on Capitol Hill to get there.
The Museum of History and Industry is pretty cool.
West Seattle is great! Take the water taxi and hang out on Alki, or swim in the salt water pool at Lincoln Park - or just swing on the kiddie swings and watch the Vashon Ferry, I love doing that. Also the Duck Tour. LOVED it. The Freemont Soltice Parade has also become ayearly tradition with us. GL
StellaZ has a great blog about cheap and/or free stuff to do around Seattle that's little one friendly. Another one of my favorite ways to get to know a city is to sign up for Groupon and Living Social - I've been in WA almost my entire life, and I had no idea half this stuff was available (I've taken trapeze classes!). So not only do you get to find out about it, it's discounted too.
