C-sections

planned c-section.... what's in your hospital bag?

This is my first time posting on this I'll be having a planned c-section in November, so I was wondering what I should include in my hospital bag.  I expect to be there for a few days, so should I bring my own toiletries?  And did you have your own robe and pj's?

I'd like to bring as much of my own stuff as I can.  Thanks for the advice!!

  • Bring as much of your own stuff as you want....I didn't wear gowns except for the actual CS & recovery.  I brought comfy PJ pants, tee-shirts, camis (I BF but don't do nursing bras so the camis double as those in the beginning for me), slippers, a boppy, our laptop, camera, camcorder, toiletries (although most hospitals will supply those if you don't care about brands), clothes for LO, and extra clothes/toiletries for DH.  We also brought snacks & coins for the vending machine :)  Oh, and with our son, DH brought his PS3.  Late at night when I was trying to sleep he gamed while holding DS.  It was their first "bonding time".  Corny, I know.....but he was in Daddy heaven :)

  • They gave me a tiny bottle of baby shampoo so I would definitely bring your own shampoo!

DH stayed with me the whole time and was totally bored, so PP's idea of the PS3 was great if your SO is going to be there with you.

  • Bring your own toilet paper- hospital TP is like sand paper!

I also brought my own shampoo and soap, slippers, nursing tank and comfy pants(used these on discharge home day).

Breast pump ?- i am glad I brought mine as the LC had me start using it right away.

Brought these things and did not use them: pads, underware, socks, nursing nightgown, book.

Dont forget the camera and stuff for DH.

  • I haven't packed yet for this time around but with my girls here's what I took:

My own toiletries, make up (lots of pics plus it made me feel better just to have a little foundation and eyeliner/ mascara on), hair brush, comfy pjs that were nursing friendly, breast pads, socks, flip flops, slippers, yoga pants that didn't hit too low, tank tops, hoodie, robe, my own pillow, boppy, cameras (digital and video), cell phone and charger, pen and paper, baby book (for the foot/ hand prints and to start filling it own in "down time"), and some snacks.

This time around I will be bringing my own pump and heating pad since the hospital charged for the use of those last time.  (Nice, eh??)  And I believe our hospital has DVD players in the rooms so I'll bring a DVD or two...

  • I didn't get any toletries at my hospital....I did bring my own toothbrush, toothpaste. But I didn't bring anything to take a shower with. The nurses did give me the J&J stuff they used for the babies so I used that. I wished I would have brought my own soap and shampoo.

I brought a robe and slippers. I didn't use the robe but instead I wore my pants (they were very loose 3/4 pants I brought at Motherhood) and cami's I brought with me. The cami's were for BF my dd.

I didn't bring my dd take home outfit only becuase my parents came everyday and the last day brought all I needed for her. THat was the same with the car seat. But if you don't have anyone to bring that with you, don't forget that stuff. You can leave the seat in the car. It was hot out so I didn't want to leave it in the car. The graco snugrider smells if it gets to hot.

I also brought my breastfeeeding pillow the boppy. I loved having it. I would rec that if you bf bring that. Establish it from the start it will help when you go home.

I did bring my own underwear to. I didn't wear the netting ones they have...only the first day or so....

  • Bring your own toiletries and towels (my hospital towels were super rough).  I also bought some cheap nightgowns from Wal Mart that buttoned in the front, so they were great for nursing.  I also wore a sleep bra the whole time.  You'll also want breast pads, maxi pads (for when you go home), underwear that go up very high so they won't rub your incision, slippers, robe.

For DH we brought comfy shorts and t-shirts, pj pants, toothbrush/toothpaste and he brought his psp.  You might want to bring a blanket or two for DH as well.

  • I would bring things that make you comfortable. I brought my own shampoo , soap, hair brush and blow dryer. I hate the hospital towels, so next time I will be bringing my own with me to the hospital.

I hated the hospital gowns with a passion. I brought yoga pants, tank tops, a robe and a few other things.  Also, make sure you bring stuff for your H if he plans to spend the night.

    GOOD LUCK! :)

  • LONG MAXI DRESSES (to wear home, or around the hospital if you don't want to wear hospital gown). Even loose yoga pants hurt me. My MIL had to go buy me a long maxi dress to wear home. I wore it everywhere for the first two weeks.

  • I brought all of my own toiletries and even my own bath towels. I also brought slipper socks with the grippies on the bottom, maternity yoga pants, and nursing tanks. And my own pillow.
  • I brought comfy clothes to change into. shampoo/conditioner, sandals for the shower, my own pillow with a bright pillow case so the cleaning people wouldn't accidentally take it. I also brought my make up because we had a photographer come one day and I wanted to look semi decent.

  • I didnt need half the crap I brought. I needed my toiletries, makeup, glasses and contact stuff, clothes to wear home and the boppy.

I stayed in my gown the whole time because I was bleeding so much that I would bleed through everything often. Plus its just easier for breast feeding.

  • I think a lot of this was covered but here are some things I brought (or wish I did, and will now do with #2):

Everyone is different but I would bring anything that will help you feel comfortable and human.

-If you are going to BF: nursing tops/pump/boppy (getting the right position after a C can be tough, didn't have this with me and it WOULD have made a world of difference)

    -comfy slippers (non-skid)

-flip flops for when you get to shower  (ewww to hospital shower)

-favorite shower products including shower gel lotion (own wash cloth too)

    -ipod speakers

-maternity leggings or yoga pants--or whatever you would normally lounge in. I'm petite and the gowns were falling off of me but I'd imagine anyone would want to be out of those as quickly as possible. For moving around/seeing people I'd wear with some sort of long zip cover up/men' shirts to go over nursing tank (it's cold if I remember). I just ordered a great zip cover up from Lands End--super cheap end of summer sale and when I put it over my bathing suit this past weekend I said this would be perfect for hospital stay

-eye mask/sleep mask if you are sensitive to light

Things that I brought the first time around that didn't get much use:

-Magazines (I laugh now thinking I'd have down time

-Bunch of candy (had gotten the tip to bring this for the nurses etc/no one really had it)

  • DS1 was and unplanned c-section and DS2 was planned. Here is what I packed for DS2.

6 pair of black yoga pants and big comfy t-shirts. DS1 kepts spitting up on me so I came prepared. Since I had pants I didn't need a robe.

10 pairs of high cut hanes panties in a really big size.

My own pads. Hospital ones suck.

1 nursing gown that I wore from less than an hour PP until I was allowed to get up and shower.

slippers. I couldn't bend over to put on socks.

5 nursing bras. DS1 managed to get those soaked with spit up too.

    nursing pads.

Crocs. They were the only shoes that fit my swollen feet after all the IVs.

I brought my own shampoo, hairdryer, and makeup. Normally I'm not a big make up person but In the hospital it makes me fell better since I feel frumpy and swollen. I also felt more confident for pictures and visitors. I usually showered and pulled myself together around 4am when things were quiet and I had time to myself.

I had my own pillows and boppy. Make sure your stuff is in bright colored cases so it doesn't get mixed with hospital laundry.

I  brought my own pump and tons of clothes and blankets. DS1 really made of mess of his stuff and went through a lot. DS2 peed at almost every diaper change so MIL had to bring more things for him.
