Special Needs

suggestions needed....

Hi!  I am new here!  My DD, who will be 2 on Sunday needs to wear glasses, she has amblyopia and is extremely farsighted.  We got the glasses on Friday, she will wear them for a total of a couple of minutes before she pulls them off.  Any suggestions on how to get her to wear them on a more regular basis?  I did ask my opthamologist and have a eye retainer on order, but any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!!8

Re: suggestions needed....

  • DD1 wears miraflex glasses. So, fairly indestructible (yeah!).

I think we started off slow and just built up the time she wore them over a few weeks.

She is also extremely farsighted and has amblyopia (currently on patching vacation per the Dr.) so if you need something, let me know!

Oh, she's 5 now, was 3.5 when she started with glasses.

  • Do you wear glasses? Maybe put aside the contacts for a bit and wear yours. Or you could just get a pair of frames. This way you can use the "I wanna be just like Mommy" feelings and model the correct behavior for how to wear glasses.

One mother I knew had issues with her DD and keeping her hearing aids on and she sort of treated the aids like a pretty "accessory" that you would never dream of leaving home without. HTH!

This. :) 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. The miraflex glasses are also super-comfortable in comparison to traditional glasses, which helped my DS a lot.

  • DS2 has worn glasses since he was 10mos old (he is now a couple of weeks shy of turning 2). He has miraflex or flexon glasses and they have a cable on the ear parts that go around the ears. Like most anything else, you just have to give her time to get used to them. We always put them on during meal times at first. His hands were busy eating to bother with the glasses. After the meal we would take them off. We just built in time wearing them overall and frequently kept them on. Even know he'll have 1-2 weeks on occasion where he just doesn't want them on his face. Sometimes I give him a reprieve of a few hours but usually I just put them back on.
  • we bribed my son with lollipops and tv shows.  it worked.

  • Thank you for all the suggestions!!  I already wear my glasses as does DH, we make it a big deal that we are putting them on and wearing them, she has no interest in that at all.  I think that the whole putting them on while eating might work for us, I am going to try this tomorrow.  I already bought the glasses and didn't get the miraflex ones, we got plastic frames, they were covered by the insurance.  I however will be getting a second set and paying out of pocket and those will more than likely be the miraflex ones.
