Trying to Get Pregnant

What will you stop doing once you get your BFP?

I've talked to friends and family about getting pregnant. I think it's ok to continue playing on my slow-pitch softball league (once per week) and snowboard until I am showing..many of them say I should stop these activities once I get my BFP..what do you all think? Besides the obvious, no drinking, smoking, eating processed lunch meat, will you stop doing anything when you get your BFP?

Re: What will you stop doing once you get your BFP?

  • I think you should listen to what your doctor says.  Everyone is going to give you a different opinion.  Although I have to say that I can't imagine snowboarding while pregnant.

And as far as the "obvious" goes- I ate lunch meat all during my pregnancy.  It was the only protein I could tolerate.  My doctor had zero problems with it.

  • I will follow my docs orders for sure. I had a friend that I was taking Bikram yoga with, and she continued doing it through her first trimester, and quit when she was 12 weeks. I thought this was probably a bad idea, knowing what I know about avoiding heat during 2ww and pregnancy. However, her doc said it was fine during 1st Tri, and the baby was born perfectly healthy. MY opinion: why jeopardize anything? Why risk it? I would definitely play it safe and not do anything that could possibly harm the fetus.

  • I will do what my doctor recommends. Many people say that they will stop working out but I will continue to exercise based on doctors instructions. I cannot think of anything besides the obvious that I would stop doing.

I personally would not snowboard though. I am not an expert and I would probably fall quite a few times just trying to make it down the mountain. I just don't like leaning forward on the board to carve so I usually land on my stomach.

  • The first time around I took spin class until I was 35 weeks.  I don't see any point in halting your lifestyle (unless the Dr. advises you to do so).  I also ate lunch meat and drank coffee, I can honestly say my child does not have two heads or a tail.

  • I will follow what my Dr. says.  Of the things that I know I need to cut back on, I am really going to miss my coffee. :(  I know it is ok in moderation, but I don't really drink it in moderation, so it will be difficult.  I am already doing 1/2 caf most of the time so that it isn't as much of a shock to the system whenever that time comes.

  • I drink diet coke all day long -- I have cut back and started drinking more water but I know I will need to be down to one a day or less while I'm pregnant and that's going to be really hard for me. I will do it, obviously, but I know I will miss it!

I drink way too much. I know I don't drink enough water so I think pregnancy will be a good reason to stop. I say that now but if MS is horrible I might not be able to handle it without it!

  • Personally when I was pregnant with DD, I stopped playing on my slow pitch softball team and snowboarding. There were to many things that "could" go wrong.  In softball, someone could hit the ball wrong or I could trip in the outfield in a pothole or just something like that.

For snowboarding, I wasn't worried about other people as much as I was worried about conditions.  I've ben boarding since I was 10 and it's rare that I fall when I'm riding but you could always hit an ice patch or little bump.  Just to be on the safe side, I stopped both until I had the baby.  My opinion, you can stop things to be safe for 9 months.  However, if you hurt your baby doing sports could you really ever forgive yourself?  I plan to stop both as well when I get my BFP.

JMO though, to each their own.

  • I have two horses and I was worried about having to stop riding.  I talked to my doctor and she told me to stop at around 20 weeks.  At that point the baby will be out of the pelvic girdle and at more risk if I feel off.  I will not ride my crazy palomino mare, but my 17 year old mare doesn't worry me.  They are my stress relievers and riding keeps me sane.  Figured it is better to be relaxed.  I will stop enjoying the wine nights with my husband but I'm ok with that.

I never heard this until my baby was already born & I can tell you I ate a turkey sandwich pretty much every day for 9 months. My son also does not have a tail lol. Some people say you can eat it if you heat it up, but then you have those who stay away from the microwave completely. There are just so many things. Your doctor lays it out for you on your first visit with the major can and can nots, and that's what all those many many MANY doctor visits are for, questions. When I get my BFP I'll be so excited to wear maternity jeans again cause they are just so dang comfy :) being pregnant was the best.

  • About lunch meat, my friend's ob said turkey is the one that is safe not to warm up.  My ob said any was fine, but to avoid it if I could do to the sodium.  But I craved grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, so I hate one for breakfast everyday for about a month.

I will be cutting back on caffeine.  I am now drinking 4 cups somedays, so I really just need to cut it back in general.

I will watch my heavy lifting.  I don't do it, ever, so it is a strain for me.  And I bled after lifting something when pregnant with DD.  I still think it was a coincidence, my progesterine was low and I think that is what caused it.

And, I told DH that women of childbearing age should not clean the litter box, so I never have to do it anyways.

  • Obviously it's your body - but one of the first things on the doctors "no-no" list when I when I got my bfp with DD was skiing/snowboarding. =(

I'll stop my excessive coffee habit (working on it slowly now, but will not give up until I see pink!)

Depending how quickly the morning sickness sets in, I will probably hand over a lot of the cooking to DH, as the smell and look of meat (and other things, including my beloved coffee) made my stomach turn.
